So here is my parable on how everyone has educational gaps. My loving dh and I were watching some edgy "learn about science" thing on Spike TV. There was a question before the commercial about a scientific process, and one of the options as osmosis. I chose that option. My hubby wanted to know why I would pick that when osmosis didn't exist. Now my hubby is one of the more brilliant men I know, but this knocked me out of my chair - after all, osmosis is pretty much the basis for biology and life as we know it! I asked where he heard that, and he said some high school science teacher told him that. As in, if you put butter and milk next to each other on the counter, if osmosis worked, you should get buttermilk. I asked if he ever took biology in college (no, he stuck to hard sci and tech) and I explained that is why he never really learned what osmosis (movement of water through cell walls, according to the show). I laughed my butt off - how can one say that osmosis not exist? Here is this brilliant man who, for 25 year, thought osmosis was a joke? Your kids won't learn everything - only God knows all. Teach them as much as you can and be happy with that. Just don't teach them that osmosis is a joke!
As someone with a biology degree.... I giggled a little at your story. Thanks. .....and thank you for the reminder. I should print out your post and put it on my wall to continue to remind me through the year.
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Of course, it is probably funnier to those of us who know that osmosis is real. I needed to hear this today!!! Thanks for posting.
Yep. Thank you! It's easy to stress about needing to cover every single bit of information for fear our children will appear dumb. Truth is, we're all a little lacking (unless you have an identic memory).
Maybe he thought (or maybe the teacher was referring to) the process of learning by osmosis! (Which may or may not exist - depending on how you think about it)
I really needed to read this today as I have been stressing over that very issue as of late. I always want to cover everything and my mind is feeling overwhelmed. I shall try to remember we can't know everything inside and out.
The more I read about learning, the more I realize that people learn all kinds of things in all kinds of ways. In fact, a lot of learning happens unplanned and it is probably remembered better in some cases that way. Of course, there is no way to insure that everyone of our children learn everything. We have to stick to the basics first, and some secondary stuff, and love them along the way. About omosis, have him put an egg (with the shell) in a container filled with vinegar. The egg's shell will disolve and the egg will get larger and somewhat firm. The egg is trying to have an equal amount of water as the vinegar and it gains it from osmosis. Then you can take the same egg and put it in a container with corn syrup and the egg will shrink. The solution is taking the moisture out of the egg to try and equalize. (something like that). It is really cool and it works.
