Just wondering if any of you support your local public school sports teams?? Do you and your children go to the games? I'm asking because our church teen group uses the games as an outing for the teens. They all go together as a group. My boys have been going this year and enjoy it. We are the only family that homeschools and this fills a void that the kids feel sometimes. So I'm glad to have this option for them. It doesn't make them want to go to school anymore than they already do. LOL. Actually, since they started doing this, I haven't heard a thing from my oldest about going back. I think this is a good thing.

On a side note, Homecoming is next month and here in Texas the tradition is homecoming mums. My family is attending the homecoming game so My girls will have mums. I haven't seen one in YEARS. I only received one when I was a freshman then we moved to Colorado and they didn't have that tradition. I was SO disappointed. I hear that tradition is slowly moving to other states. Does your state do it??? Does anyone here make their own? They are SO EXPENSIVE.. So I'm making them myself..

I've been feeling guilty lately about keeping my oldest home. I KNOW it's best for him, but I had been feeling like he was being deprived of some of the truely fun and memoriable parts of highschool. Am I the only one who feels guilty over them missing the fun stuff. Like pep rally's and bon fires??

We've had mums for homecoming since I was a kid (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth! LOL). Shouldn't be a problem making your own - just be sure to "do it up huge" (or medium) - with ribbons in the school colors, and some of those little plastic-that-look-like-gold-or-silver charms (a few) dangling on skinny ribbon (footballs, megaphones, etc.). At least, that's what ours always looked like. No, I never felt guilty that ds was missing anything - he went to ball games with friends, and was invited to a prom but didn't go. Our church hosts a "fifth quarter" party after home games (it helps that our church is right next door to the high school). When the school does a bonfire, the whole town turns out - it's very public. So no, I can't say he missed that much.

Why are you disappointed that homecoming mums are spreading to other states?

Oh no, I'm not disappointed that they are spreading to other states.. I wish they would. I was just saying that when we moved to Colorado in the late 80's they didn't even know what we were talking about. It was more like a prom where everyone wore formals. They do that here too but they also have the mums. And the dance is on a differant night. Or at least it used to be.. I'm excited about homecoming this year. I'm in the process of making cheer skirts for the girls and we'll get a school logo t-shirt for each of them.

We had them when I was in high school and I'm in Missouri. That was late 80's, early 90's. Not sure if they still do. I suppose they would. I thought they were really pretty. I wonder why they would cost that much? I wouldn't think they would be that expensive since Homecoming is traditionally mum season. If you think you can do it, then I would do it myself. I'd just go pick some out of my garden.

I always made my own. I actually think some of them are getting a bit rediculous. They were still expensive but not nearly as if I had bought one made. Around here you can get the base (the mum with the ribbon) and then just add your extras to it for a reasonable price. The base is like $20 or something. That saves ALOT of time.

MizzuMom- This is why they are so expensive -Gargantuan Mums

I don't go to the games but then I hear stories of shootings and gang stuff going on at them so it is not inviting to me. I go to my own kids sports games that works for me!

Yikes!! I wouldn't go to them either if we had that issue here. We're small town USA and not a lot goes on around in our neck of the woods.

As far as the mums go, I am definately going to make our own. I think my son my be giving one to his best friend who happens to be a girl in our youth group. Neither of them are old enough to "date" yet. 16 is the offical date age in our house. He has 2 more years to go,but I don't have an issue with him going with a group of kids who are VERY well chaperoned. I guess you could call it a group date?? Anyhow, I have been looking on the internet at the new fads for the mums and they are WAY differant than what they were when I was in school. I'm going to put some boa's and tiger striped ribbon around the mum. And "jazz" it up a little. If my son does in fact want to give his friend one, she'll be wearing it to school so I want it to be very cute!

Those are HUGE GIGANTIC mums!! I wouldn't want one that big. Especially if I had to wear it for long. Can you imagine how heavy they are??? That's just NUTS.
