5 cats (7 seven if you include all the ones I feed, 2 wild)
1 turtle (named Speedy, because he is very fast for a box turtle)
20+ tree frogs (lost count) (that I forgot to include in my list at the bottom)
1 beagle (who needs to lose 25+ lbs)
    1 quarter horse (who I don't like)

My ds asked me if we ever moved how would we carry all the pets. Thankfully we are not planning on moving.

    She....

Where do you keep your guinea pig? I read up on them also and figured that would be better for dd than the hamster. I also read how all these rodents can carry yucky diseases and stuff. I am not excited about that. I also am concerned about the smell and mess. I noticed in some photos that there was some wood chips or whatever lying around the cages. Are these messy boogers?

What have I gotten myself into now?

Sami wants a cat, but the landlord says no.

I wanted anothe hedgehog, but all the pet stores that used to sell them have closed down.

LOL Sami and Savannah like to crawl around on the floor meowing loudly. I actually had to make a rule that cats are only allowed in the bedroom with the door closed! :!: I don't think this counts though...

Teacher Mom, I love horses. This one I don't like he bites everyone except my dd who is the only one that can ride him or even get into the pen with. Everyone else he will chase out kicking and snorting. I have always been around horses. I grew up breaking them and riding in the local rodeos.

We do not have any pets due to the kids allergies. We all miss having cats.

    My married daughter has
1 Cat - she named the cat Tom after Tom Kitten in the Beatrix Potter books, but they always call him Mr.Kitty. This spoiled cat is going to go into shock when they have children someday and he get's demoted.
    1 rabbit
    1 parakeet

We use the Carefresh bedding and...sometimes when he jumps up and runs....it does fly out of the cage - not too bad. BUT...we have a big cage for him. We babysat a friends who had one of those store bought cages that was more messy, I thought. They only used newspaper and...the carefresh tends to absorb and take away the smell. NOW...in saying that I still put one of those scented airfreshners on the shelf above him.

The Coroplast I have the bottom of the cage built out of is about 6.5" high so...that helps contain the stuff.

He lives in our classroom. Under his cage I have built all sorts of storage space that we use to hold our school stuff (coloring books, craft supplies, etc...)

As far as disease.....well just about everything can carry disease some are just more icky than others. Knock on wood...we've never had a problem with ours. We got him when he was little. They can be noisy at times...I'll warn you of that. They have this pig squeal that they do when they get excited. People ask me if I have a bird.

    She...

We saw some the other day at a local pet store. As soon as we got close to the area they freaked. They started squealing and all three of them ran into the little igloo hideaway that was in there. We could squat down and see them hiding in the back. It was too cute. I read they are shy little guys.

I first thought we could also keep ours in our playroom/classroom. However, dd is determined to have it in her room. Neither place has a good area for one though. I looked at the cool cages on the site you suggested. Those are big! I just don't know about where to put it. I thought the perfect place would be downstairs in our living room area. It is in the back of the house and nobody really uses that room but the kids. They tend to go back there and goof off. There would be room in there I'm sure.

    Thanks for the advice Sheila!

I wouldn't recommend putting a pig in the kids bedroom. They are nocturnal.

Yeh our cage is pretty big. A good 5ft long by about 2.5 ft wide. BUT....underneath is all storage so....

They can be shy but...ours will stand on top of the PVC T pipe that we got for him to hide in (instead of those expensive igloo's) and scream for his fresh veggie breakfast in the morning. He's a bit spoiled. I also bought him one of those cat/dog little beds for around $12 (on sale) and I put a blanket over the top for sleeping and hiding. It was much cheaper than the "special" things they have for them.

You just have to remember they are very social and they like the attention so...don't put them in a non traffic area. They eat hay, cavey pellets and fruits & veggies. They can't generate their own vitamin C so...they need to be feed things that have it.

We had a hamster when my oldest was younger, ( grin) it kept geting the cage door open in the middle of the night and was 'nesting' under my bed! we found him because I heard the chewing of my photo albums! lol!
Since he died, my ds was quite distraught over it. We have only had fish, who die and the turtle who will live forever! So mecca is our only pet.
