Does anyone know of a good American History curriculum? I have found one online but I am unable to post the site here. it is under americanhistory but is (org and not com) It appears to me that with a little work this could be a great outline for our history. Anyone have an opinion?
Haven't looked yet but I have heard great things about raisingrefounders written by a mama here on the board. It's free!! I have used and really enjoyed, The Complete Book of US History by American Education Publishing, and added hands on crafts and other reading materials and blazed our own path. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE Joy Hakim's A History of US, but I won't use it with my kids till they are all older (like 9th grade-ish). There isn't anything wrong with it, just a bit more meat than younger kids need in my opinion.
Take a look at All-American History. That's what I used, but it was a bit too textbookish for my liking. It's in two volumes.
If you click the link in my signature you'll find some free American History stuff. I will begin to get the elementary grades up this week sometimes - maybe Friday night if I am lucky. The first semester for the level that would suit your 6th grader is already up. And free.
ColoradoMom- I looked at your site and looks like you have been busy busy. I like the way it is set up. Hopefully I will have some time tonight to look more indepth but I may give it a try. Thanks!
Do you want a textbook approach or more literary approach? You could do something like Beautiful feet which has and Early American History for up through 6th grade. Winter Promise has some really great programs for this age period too.
I love Sonlight too. Their American history is more of a 3rd-5th grade or a 7th-9th grade program. Winter Promise is set up alot like Sonlight but they have a very heavy focus on American History and have more of a range of packages.
I printed off unit 1 from raising refounders and we will try that tomorrow. It looks interesting and very well put together. I think that it may make my kids want to research parts deeper so I may be able to get some essays and research papers out of it too. Thanks ColoradoMom! Thanks to everyone for all the ideas. If this doesn't work I may try another one.
REALLY!!! I'll keep that in mind for Phillip. Rachael's doing Notgrass American for high school right now.
Ambleside online also had free American History curriculum/lesson plans, but you need to get the books - either buy them or at the library.
