Do you go through a particular history cycle? What period are you studying this school year?

Based on what you are using how many times will you be covering each period before graduation?

We are going in cronological order. We started with the ancient world and are now doing the Middle Ages. We should finish that by Jan. (been working on that since last school year) and then we'll move on to the Early Modern Era.

We are on our second year of American History. Prior to this (8th grade) we only did Ancient, Middle, Renaissance, and Discovery. I think my kid was the only 12 year old in America who didn't know who the Pilgrims were.

We will do Geography next year with no real history other than what is included in the text. After that probably something Eastern for 10th grade. Japan maybe.

He'll take art history CC in junior and senior year, then that's it. We will not circle back to ancients again. We've had enough I think.

We do history chronologically. We started at Creation, did ancient Egypty, then ancient Greece/Rome, and now we're doing the Middle Ages thru the Reformation.

My guess would be we'll hit each time period at least one more time before graduation. Some eras will be covered more often as they are wrapped up in literature that we'll study from that time period.

We did a real simple intro to American history in the primary grades. Than a year of geography, a year of Ancient Greeks, and soon to begin a year of Roman History. The plan is to go through modern history and then repeat each one again in high school, just more in depth. We'll see if it works out.
I just remember in high school always learning the same things every year in history and never getting past the industrial revolution. I always wanted to know what happened after the invention of the printing press. ;)

We are currently doing world history for my ds14. He is an avid history buff and knows more about history, including American and ancient, than anyone I know. For him, I am having him read the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. It goes through world history chronologically so you see what was going on around the world during the same time period. Even though it is secular (we are Christian), we have found that all of it backs up life originating from the approximate location of the garden of Eden and moving outward from there. Most would not look at it as a complete curriculum, but since we delve into it deeply, incorporate geography and all the info is retained by ds14, I think he is learning more than he would using a text that is redundant (can't tell you how many texts take forever focusing on Egypt  ).

Ds14 is also going through dd11's history with her. She is studying Ancient history from scripture up until the exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt.....just realized I need to take Mystery of History off of my signature since we ended up using something else....

Did we go to school together???!!! It was so bad that when I was a lazy freshman in college, I opted to take US History through 1865 just so I wouldn't have to study!

I make up my own stuff and we are slowing going through history chronologically. We are on ancient Egypt right now and hope to make it through ancient Greece this year. Hopefully we will get to go through each period in history twice before graduation.

We are finishing up the Middle Ages and moving to the Renaissance and Reformation. We did start with American History in a sort of informal way and then moved back to the Old Testament. My son devours history so I can't keep it away from him so he can be reading or watching a movie about any historical period at any one time. :)

Sign me up as another who only learned about Columbus, the original Tea Party, Civil War, and once in awhile the Industrial Revolution, at least in public school. I also loved to read and had a mom who loved history.

With the political climate being what it is, I figured we better concentrate on Early American history for right now. Learning about how hard we fought for our country has really helped our kids understand why mommy gets on a soapbox about our current administration! I'm raising little TEA Partiers,I think.

I guess I am going to stick out like a sore thumb.

I have decided that we may not study world history. I had thought about it, but I don't know yet and my son is in 9th-10th. I would rather spend more in depth time in U.S. history. Maybe next year or maybe not.

There is so much to history that I can easily get overwhelmed with it all. I don't think I personally ever studied world history until college and I did OK- relatively. Even when I took the college world history class it was a waste of time. I made an "A", but I couldn't tell you now more than a couple of names and I don't remember what they did. SAD, but the class was very much a read, take a test and move on type of class. I did it at home, so no class discussion.

Reminder to brain - do not drink while reading Brooke's comments!

I took a semester of Russian history in college and fell so in love with it that I almost changed majors! It's amazing how fascinating history can be when taught by someone who truly loves it.

We haven't really focused on history except in unit studies. Last spring we spent a couple months on the Oregon Trail. It's easy and relavant since we live along it.

This year we are focusing on world geography, little bits of history tossed in, but not the focus. Next year I plan to focus on US geography. After that we may get to history in a more formal way.

We did Renaisance/Reformation last year. This year, we're not doing history, really. We're doing "Around the World in 180 Days", which is world geography, but it has history with it, too.

We are doing geography with my ds and my continue next year only because he REALLY likes it. He is aspiring to be a pilot so geography will be really good for him. My dd is in 11th grade and is doing US history. We have pretty much followed the abeka guidelines for her. She's my abeka kid. :)

Wow-I feel like an odd ball out.

I don't plan on doing chronological.

I plan on starting close to home then branching out.

We'll start with local history, then state history, then US then world....
