I would like to have some american history storybooks to read to my 6 year old to make it interesting. Any recommendations? Thanks.
Have you checked out Usborne books? I can't remember off the top of my head what they have for American history but my 6 yr old LOVES LOVES LOVES any of their history or science books. She devours them and then goes back for seconds!
Have you tried http://apps.simplycharlottemason.com/ My 6 year old has liked most all the books we're chosen from this website.
Some of the Magic Tree House books would be fun to introduce a history topic and then you could head to the library for more books to go with it.
We won't be covering American History for many years, but I do cover some American History in literature and reading selections. For literature I'm reading Rosa, Henry's Freedom Box, and Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom to my first grader. You can see his literature list with links to those books here. For reading he will read: Little Runner of the Longhouse Wagon Wheels The Titanic The Long Way Westward Prairie School You can see the complete list with links to those specific books here.
Thanks, I'll look into the ones mentioned and see what I find. I don't want to do anything formal, just introduce some history with our read-alouds.
there is a story book style one, its brown called I think.. "Exploring American HIstory" not positive... we got it from CLP?
Well one of my favorite books which my 6 year old reads is The Complete Book of United States History. its from grades 3-5, but the reading level there isn't all that complex. It tells the entire U.S. history from start to finish; from when the first people settled in america to when Columbus founded the nation, to our modern day history. its a pretty small book considering all the information it holds, yet the print is big, and the pictures are wonderful. I have a lot to recommend this book.
