We are pulling my 7-year-old out of private school and will begin homeschooling...I mailed the affidavit yesterday! I am so excited. My older son (12) is already home educated, although I cannot say that he is homeschooled in the true sense of the word because he is attending an online school. Now I am working on DD (10), who will remain at her private school through the end of the year. She loves it and doesn't know if she wants to leave next year to HS. I have a few months to change her mind!
I'm in PA and I had to send an affidavit/letter stating that I will be homeschooling my son. It had to include various components such as that I would be conducting lessons in English, I have at least a HS diploma, etc... and I had to have the letter notarized.
Oh ok. I guess every state is different. It's so weird. You wonder why they don't just have every state be the same. Huh!
It sure would be nice if every state was the same, but it is unlikely to ever happen. Education falls under the power of the states, so each state can legislate their own policies and procedures. This is one of the reasons NCLB caused such an uproar, because the federal government was telling the states how to handle something the states had express control over.
I'm glad that this isn't controlled at the federal level, because I suspect we would all end up with less freedom. I live in NJ, and am thankful that I don't have to file an affidavit, and have no contact with the school district. ShellChelle, Congrats on bringing your son home. Enjoy!
