I was just wondering - how do homeschooled kids go to college? I didn't go to college in this country, yet am aware of some points to earn etc. How does that work? Who gives HS-ed kids high school diploma? Do they have to take tests? In what grades? And another question - do kids have to take any state tests along middle school years? How about non-schoolers? What is it? Do they go to college? Thank you to anyone who has time to reply!!
Over 1000 colleges accept homeschoolers. Including Harvard, Brown, MIT, and lots more. SAT scores and such are used as well as portfolios and a diploma signed by the child's parents. hslda has lots of info on homeschoolers getting into college as well as your state laws. As far as testing in what grades-depends on what state you are in. Some states require no testing, others every few years or even every year. I have to test my son at the end of 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th here in GA.
They take an ACT/SAT test and apply. Plain and simple. I will issue the diploma. Colleges have learned that, on the whole, hs'ed kids are independent learners and will apply themselves in college. Most colleges are more than willing to work with us.
The ACT/SAT tells it all.. Some may ask for them, but from what I understand it's all depending on ACT/SAT scores. I have a freshman son who I am preparing for college. I am keeping transcripts just in case. I don't grade like public school does so he will most likely end up with A's and B's. My main focus is making sure he can score well on ACT and SAT tests. He's unsure about going to college but I'm not going to wait to start preparing him to pass those tests in case he does want to go. He will take them and should do very well. Beginning in January we will start the study process and get him used to what is on the tests and used to taking mock tests so he knows what to expect. Yes, I know he still has a few years, but why wait till the last minute??
Sd got into college just like any other high school senior. She took her SAT and applied. I created a transcript based on her grades. We graded using number grades and our transcript program calculates gpa. We issue a diploma but she also recieved a letter of completion from our district superintendent's office. She is now a freshman in college. In NY homeschooled kids are required to test every other year between 4th & 8th grade (so either 4th, 6th ,8th or 5th & 7th) and then ever year from 9-12. We are not required to take the state tests but have the option of choosing from a list of state approved tests. We use the Stanford Achievement Tests.
How do/did you do their transcripts? Is there a software program that will do this or is it something that I should do on my own?
here we just went to the college of our choice and signed them iup, its open enrollment. My state is great for that,
For sd's transcript I used HomeSchool Tracker +. I loved the way it printed it all out and even gave a gpa. My sister on the other hand just typed up one on the computer and had her sons use that (and one is now in grad school)
I Used one from online, I think I used a Donnayoung.org one , there is a link either there or someplace else that gives you the gpa calculator too, you enter in the grades/percent and it totals it.
We've been looking at various scholarships and some are asking for a completed transcript. Will the Home School Tracker be what I need to do?
Also my kids did both home school and an unacredited homeschool private school? If that makes sence, it is run like a private school with SOS as the main lead lesson plan, and it is a recognised high school diploma for a private school. in our state we register as a private home school. so same dif.
