We've had this discussion before but I didn't have any advice to give to whom asked. BUT NOW........ I need the advice, my dad, the kids PAPAW is getting the kids Nentiendo DS's (well not new ones, probably used or refirbished from Game stop) I'll be actually the one picking them out and I nee some advice on the different kinds. Malcolm has the DS lite..... but no games yet because he hasn't saved up any money for the games yet...... but he will get them from papaw for Christmas. So my questions:

    regular DS or lite?
    whats the difference?

    are the games interchangable?

    what are some good games?

is Gamestop the best place to get them?

Any Problems I need to be aware of?

The only advice I have is how Gamestop has been good for us. I have a very indecisive child who has a strong opinion later. We like to buy used games from Gamestop and have the option to trade them in within 7 days. For a few weeks, we were going every few days until we finally found a game that was a winner for us. I hate paying 20+ dollars for a gamble of whether the game will be one my son likes. So, we have used that wonderful feature many times.

We have three DS lites in or house and enjoy them alot. (One of them is mine, LOL)

Not only are the DS games interchangeable, but the can also play the older GameBoy Advance games, which was a big deal to us since we already had some of those before upgrading to DS.

Favorite games at our house include: Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros. Mario and Sonic at teh Olympic Winter Games, Lego indiana Jones, Lego Star Wars, Professor Layton (for adults or older kids),

Phineas and Ferb games are on the wish list.

My girls share a DSi, that they saved for and bought. I'm not sure what the difference in the DS lite is, but my girls LOVE the camera on the DSi.

My oldest DS has had his ds lite for 2 1/2 years, the other two we have had about a year, we have had no problems with the hinges, but I have heard that some people do. We haven't gotten any type of case. I did buy new styluses not long ago as the old ones kept falling out and getting lost.

I did not read all responses, so sorry if I repeat anything.

First, a regular DS is the same as a DS lite. There are 3 types of DS's...a DS lite, DS XL (new one...larger in size), and a DSi. The DSi has a camera in it and you can download games from the internet onto it. The other cool thing about a DSi is that you don't need to hook a cord between DS's to play multiplayer games. It has an internet browser to make this and other things possible.

Games ARE interchangable...they all work for each DS system. I did not know about the old Gameboy games...that is awesome and I just learned something new!:)

Game Stop, imo, is a little pricey unless you buy the games and such used. If you are going to get things new, go to Walmart or somewhere similar. Game Stop is good for used stuff and we do go there when we want to buy used games, but we don't buy anything new there. Before we got Tanner his DS we checked Game Stop. It so happens at that time their DS's were $100 used still. To me, I'd rather pay the extra $30 to get a new one where it's under warranty. But that's just me. Not sure if Game Stop has a warranty similar to new purchases in a store???

Tanner has not had a single problem with his DS (knock on wood). He loves it, plays with it all the time. The ONE lifesaver...we did purchase Nerf Armor for it. It's a case made out of Nerf material...if it drops it literally bounces it protects it SO WELL! It really saved his DS a couple times. I would get it for them...it's a great $14 investment.

Oh...and good games...Tanner's favorites have been the Lego games...Lego Batman, Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Star Wars, Lego Rock Band, etc. He also loves Mario Cart and Scribblenauts.

My dd11 just saved up her money and bought a DS (lite) from Wal-Mart.com. She was able to get a bundle with a case, charger, and other accessories plus a free game. Shipping was very, very cheap (less than what the tax at the store would have been). We looked for quite a while to price them. That was earlier this summer, so I bet they have better bundles for the holidays.

I have DS lite that I share with my daughter. We buy used games from gamestop and amazon. It also has a slot for old GameBoy Advance games. I don't know how easy it is to find a regular ds anymore. But they play the same games. On my ds lite my daughter has worn the hinges out. I really like that you can play GBA games on it because you can get all the classic Mario Games, and you can find them for super cheap. I thought about getting the DSi for my daughter because it has the camera but decided to wait and get a DS 3D when it comes out.

Toys R Us has a holiday bundle.
    So does Target, I think.

    Check on www.blackfriday.info

ETA: Nevermind, Target doesn't. I'm frustrated with them this year, as that is where I wanted to get our Wii from on black friday. Ugh.

Best Buy just came out with the black friday ads too.

I bought my 3 dds each a ds lite last Christmas. I bought them all on ebay. One of them I found for around $150 (from Hong Kong). It came with 13 games. That worked great because it gave them a wide variety to see what they like. I just wrapped the games seperately so they were marked to all three. My dad bought 2 games for them as well. I have not had to buy any more since they have such a variety. We love them.
