I'm looking into colleges for my son. If he were to go away to college, he would be really turned off by drinking. I've heard of colleges that assign certain dorms as No Drinking or No partying or whatever. But I don't know how to find such colleges. He might consider a small Catholic college, but because of his major (pre-med) he may end up at a larger school. How do I find out which colleges have these types of dorms? Is there a codeword I should be looking for when we check college websites? Thanks

I went to Oral Roberts. That was the whole school, lol! I think you'd have to ask each college specifically, that it wouldn't be something prominent on their website.

I went to BYU (Brigham Young University) and that was the whole school too. But I'm not sure that's what your looking for.

I know that some college rankings do most/least party schools etc. You can start by looking there. It would give you an idea of the overall campus.

Thanks for the replies, but no, that's not what I'm looking for. Definitely not looking for a Protestant college. Looking for a mainstream college. Could be public or private.

Mine was like that I joined a dorm that had a strict rule no drinking in the building, and no parties in the building. People could invite a few friends to their room, but anything more and they were asked to leave. If someone came home drunk they were to go to their room. If they were disruptive they would be asked to leave! (we all thought that was a tough rule, but it kept people in line). It was a good experience for me. I was still able to participate in dorm life but didn't have to put up with as much garbage, and I lived with like minded people.

    We were in Canada though!

I think at our University it was listed in the section on Residence life. But my advice would be to make phone calls if you don't get a response here. It really was a great thing for me, I would suggest doing the work and trying to find some schools that do it.

I went to Oklahoma State and the entire campus was alcohol free (I believe it still is, though it was discussed at one time whether to allow it at the stadium or not). I guess I never realized that some campuses would allow drinking in the dorms.

I went to Mississippi State University and the dorms are alcohol free there as well as rest of the campus(other than the football stadium).

I believe the term you're looking for is "Dry campus" vs "Wet campus"

Dry Campus is of course alcohol free and Wet campus is alcohol allowed.

My niece goes to Baylor University in Waco, TX (it is a baptist school) and there is no alcohol allowed anywhere on campus. Dont' get me wrong - the kids still drink - they just don't do it on campus.

You might also search substance-free dorms. I've heard it termed that way fairly often.
