My six year old has a problem with pronoun usage. When she should say 'she', she says 'her', and 'they', she says 'them'. Ex: "Them brought them toys to my house" or "Her said no". I have corrected her over and over again, but it just doesn't stick. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Mom 2 3, it appears that she is the baby of the family? I would, for the moment, just continue with gentle correction, and not feel too frustrated about it at this point. They are little for such a short period of time, and I've always believed that sometimes they will hold onto certain "babyish" habits, because they aren't ready to "grow up" yet.
Oh, I should also add that DS12 was the same way to an extent. He can now label a sentence like I never have been able to, and he's doing algebra that I didn't even touch on until the end of highschool. ~ Yes, there were a few people who let me know that I should have been more harsh with the grammatical corrections at the moment. To them! lol
Frankly, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Sounds pretty normal to me. I certainly wouldn't try "to fix it" at age 6.
As long as you are speaking correctly in your home, it will remedy itself. The only people I know who continue it into adulthood have parents who still use pronouns inappropriately. If she is writing a sentence it's a good opportunity to have her practice it the correct way.
I agree with PP, I wouldn't freak out over it. Just model correct grammar to her, she'll get it in time. My almost 7 year old still says "gooder" instead of better sometimes and "foots" instead of feet and "deers" instead of "deer" for plural. The English language is so irregular and weird, 6 years isn't near enough time to figure it all out
That sounds reasonable. She was playing with one of her friends the other day and the girl kept correcting her and said 'Don't you know how to talk?' That got me worried that I needed to do something more. Kids can be mean, I know. Sometimes that can be a catalyst for change. Oh and yes, alittlepeace, she is the baby of the family. We have never used baby talk with her, either. I guess she just needs to mature a little.
Pronouns are repeated throughout most of the school years because it does take time to learn them. At six years old, I wouldn't worry about it since she is going to cover pronouns for many years to come.
I thought my 5 year old would say "her" for she forever! Kids always have silly ways of saying things. Continue to gently correct or let it go...if you are speaking correctly in your home and doing a lot of reading...it would correct itself.
