There may be a possibility of our family moving to the Denver area..from Fort Worth, Texas. Is Colorado considered "homeschool friendly"? What areas within approx. 50 miles from Denver airport are family friendly? We have read many wonderful things about Colorado Springs....any input you have would be really helpful on areas, homeschooling groups, co-ops, etc. We have lived in Texas our whole lives..so this is all new to us!

    Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!

We are very homeschool friendly. If you are Christian there is a HUGE homeschool group in Parker (which is a very nice family friendly neighborhood and not too far from my place).

The homeschool law in a nutshell is an intent to homeschool form sent to the district of your choice every year and testing every other year beginning in 3rd grade.

Colorado Springs is also very HS friendly and beautiful - but if your work is in Denver I would NOT recommend the drive up from the Springs. Traffic is a nightmare with a capital N.

Here is the Parker area homeschool group: https://www.pche.org/info/index

We live in the Springs and are loving it. I agree though that the commute would be terrible to Denver. However there are some wonderful homeschool groups here that often have events in Denver and you are free to join us. If you go to Meetup.com and look for homeschool groups in Colorado Springs you will find a group called CHUMS. It is free to join and we have events all over the place.

We have only lived here 1 1/2 years but have already found Colorado to be a wonderful place to homeschool. Denver has tons of museums that offer free days, the zoo offers 8 free days per year, and etc. The first year we lived here we filed with the school district, but this year we decided to use an umbrella school in Denver so that they get our test scores instead of the school district. Now we don't feel any pressure at all to teach to the test or worry about what we choose to cover.

My wife and I have lived in both DFW (she's native Texan, we lived in Plano/Frisco area) and Denver. For areas in Denver that will probably be most like FW, check out Parker, Lone Tree, Highlands Ranch, Castle Pines, and Castle Rock areas. I think you'll find these areas very family friendly and a pretty easy transition from DFW.
