I have a 6yr. old first grader with type 1 diabetes. It seems everyday at school is a challenge for him. I know they are trying to help but I feel he is in the office more than the classroom. I get calls daily asking me what they should be doing depending on his blood sugar readings. I really wanted him to feel like diabetes was no big deal he could go to school and be okay. But it seems as if he may be using this as an excuse to leave the classroom. He hates going to school, he says everyday that he hates school. He is so smart I sometimes think he may be bored. I really need some advice!
Has anyone else dealt with this?
Any advice on how to get started in Ohio?
Any support groups near Findlay Ohio?

If he truly hates school, I would remove him. It might benefit you to say you will try homeschooling for 1 year & see how he (& you!) like it. He may want to return to school after that. Go online & search homescool in Ohio & you should see a list of options. There are free online schools, but they use a public school curriculum. There are other virtual schools or you can get info from your local public or private schools regarding required books. I am new, so my info is limited. I know there are Super Experts here that know far more than what I have told you. One thing for sure...it will start out rough, but once you & your son find a balance & correct learning style, you will find it fairly easy & you won't beleive how much free time he will end up with each day for sports, karate or other socializing activities. Good Luck to you!!

I'm homeschooling in Ohio for the first time this year. My children were in public school before this. To get started, I had to send a letter to my local school district's superintendent. I got a sample letter from a homeschooling friend, but you should be able to find one online. I had to agree to teach certain subjects, give a brief outline of what I plan to teach and any curriculum, verify that I had at least a high school diploma and agree to spend 900 hours. I received a reply letter from the superintendent that basically said "OK, good luck!". I know that at the end of the year I need to have testing or a portfolio review to send with next year's notice of intent, but I don't have any experience with that yet.

    Welcome!
I took my children out of school when they were in K and 2nd grades. Best decision ever.
The nice thing about homeschooling is that it's not a "forever" decision. Try it for a year and see how it goes. You may decide you love it and you never want to send him back! Or you may decide it's not working and place him back in school, but you and your son will be forever changed having that year together.

    Best wishes.

Ohio moms~we are starting a 50 state study and looking for help from HS families in each state~I don't have any from Ohio. We would like to get a family picture, postcard and something special/unique that represents your state/area. If you are interested in more info please email me!
