I got an offer for a 3 month free trial of ALEKS math program on the computer. I have never heard of it. I am waiting to be able to buy teaching textbooks for my son who struggles in math. Has anyone heard of this or had any success with it? Thanks
We tried Aleks for my daughter last year when she was struggling with algebra, it did not help her. She now uses Teaching Textbooks. My son is autistic and goes to a private school. At the start of this year they set him up with the Aleks program and it didn't do much for him either. It was nice that it set up a pie chart for him and he was able to see his weaknesses, but doing the actual work was hard for him. He is now using the Teaching Textbooks algebra that my daughter used. Needless to say, we love Teaching Textbooks! If your son is struggling, I would try the TT first.
I've had several friends use it and like it quite a bit. The kids like the independence and watching the 'pie' of understood concepts grow. I've heard it described as adequate but not exceptional for a curriculum. I've heard it is excellent for checking for and filling in gaps. I've heard it can be weak on explanations if the kid struggles with math and light on novel problem solving. I've heard that there are quite a few colleges that use Aleks for math placement testing. We are trying the 3 month free trial in order to see what the Chemistry is like. We're doing basic chem this spring so it was good timing. I haven't activated it yet, I'm waiting until nearer the end of the month. I know a lot of people enjoy TT but it is not a very rigorous program. I would be cautious about using it if you think your child may be interested in a math/science/engineering type future.
I had a friend who used it and loved it. I just signed up for the 3 month trial. I haven't used it long enough to say that it's a great program, but so far it seems ok. But we are using it to suppliment our mus. It's free and we needed Something to change things up a bit. My kids like doing work on the computer so they are enjoying this. I'm a little bit disappointed in the kids assessment scores though. I know they know the stuff that they were assessed on but it's showing that they aren't mastered yet. I don't know that I would use it as a stand alone curriculum but for filling in gaps and extra practice, I think it's ok.
I cannot find the three month trial. On their website it says you only get a 48 hour trial. Anyone know what I am doing wrong? I have it now. Thanks anyway!!
My brother is a math teacher and they use this at his school. Not sure for what tho. I suspect it's for purposes of remediation.
