I apologize for the repeat topic. I saw similar posts here, but paid little attention since the problems didn't appeal to me at the time. I am facing the decision to find a laid out curriculum, for the number of the reasons here. I hoped that I would be able to do my own planning and follow it, but it seems our life here is busier than expected, and stop hs-ing is not an option what so ever. Some time ago I posted a question about K12, and got some very helpful insights from you guys. Can you share your experience with Time4learning and Abeka Academy? I really have to find online school, and fast.
I have a friend that uses the abeka academy and loves it. We are using the at home abeka (no online stuff) and although it is very thorough, it can be very boring-LOTS of paperwork and seatwork. I chose Abeka because that is what my girls used at their private christian school and I was happy with what they learned. I think it is great for schools, but I skip a lot of the "busywork". I don't think I will continue with it next year, but I will use it for my 2 yo to teach her phonics and handwriting when the time comes.
Abeka is more advanced than T4L, so keep that in mind when you choose one. You'll have to look at the scope and sequence to decide on a level.
We did Abeka DVDs and there was way to much work, way to much, IMHO. I don't know anything about the Academy, but expect for DC to have to do a lot of work.
I am a T4L user here. I really like it for my younger ones and they enjoy it. I have been an on and off again user of T4L since I started homeschooling. It had gotten a bad rap before but it's a good supplement for my family. It's great for those long family trips when I PC time is the only schooling they'd get during the visits. We don't go in order because I have them go to the topics I am teaching them. My youngest goes in order because it's just LA and Math. My son and daughter are all over the place because I pick and choose what they will do for the day. My oldest can do her work on her own but I have to look thru to see what extras there are for the subjects. Right now she is making a comic strip with past and present tense words and the past/present participles. anything to make those fun. I have tried the book version of A Beka and just couldn't get the feel for it. We just read and answer questions and do the tests. I met a mom who used the DVD and was interested. After hearing her complian about it being so much work it was something I didn't want at this time. She said her children were learning but for her it was quite a bit of paperwork and sending to the company the papers. This mom has been here as long as me and I have year to hear a positve comment about the A Beka DVD curriculum. I don't know anyone else using it.
Thank you, Homeschooler6. I see, different things work for different people. The best way to go about it - to try it. I have checked T4L, and it seemed to be too light for us. I spoke on the phone with a person who uses Abeka Academy, and they love it. I am not find of ton of paperwork (remembering private school arhg!). Keep posting your opinions everyone, please
Alpha Omega has an online academy, http://www.aoacademy.com/ I think you can do it with either the Lifepacs (print), SOS (computer based), or Monarch (online).
Hi We have only used the bok version of Abeka as the DVD version was IMO was way to exspensive  We tried Abeka for a yr and a half and it was not a good fit for our family. We then switched to T4L after that and my kids love it! We use it as a core and have had great sucess with it. In fact my kids are above grade level since the program allows you to work at your own pace and gives access to multi grades at once. They also offer a 2 week money back if you dont like it and I have also been told that you can call them up and if your willing to do a review they will give you your 1st month free So maybe just give it a try and see for your self HTH Good Luck!
I agree! We use T4L as a core curriculum with workbooks to supplement. I don't see how it would be considered lower level at all!
Just wanted to add that with T4L there are extras within the program too. The PreK had little science experiments to do and the 5th has extra activies included in the reading (LA). I don't push the extras since I use it more as a supplement like days we don't hit the books but I want them to do something. I suggest giving it a try for their trial period. If you need longer than it's just $20 for the month.
