How many words do you allow your child to get wrong on their spelling test before moving on? I'm afraid I'll never move on from chapter 1 at this point!
Tara, I usually require 80% on everything before moving on. On a 20 word spelling test, that would be 4 wrong. I usually make them write each missed word correctly ten times after the test, and then forget about it and move on. It's not their last chance to learn that word in their lifetime. If they consistently miss than many, I devise some sort of additional practice during the week that is not part of their regular practice - such as writing the list in alphabetical order, or getting as many of the list words into as few sentences as they can manage (even silly sentences), or having the student practice the word list on www.spellingcity.com
I like to look at patterns. If one or two words are missed, but the pattern is well known, don't worry about it. If the words that are missed are all part of the same family, I'd spend more time on it.
Yep...I loved this program, but my DD9 tested out of the 6th grade level. I would just carry any words misspelled over to the next week and just keep moving on. I am planning on starting DD4 in this next year sometime
Well, MOM24BOYS, DD7 tested out at a 1st grade level, even though she is in 2nd grade. I was just wondering if A Reason For Spelling helped kids understand any rules to remember as well as helping them to retain new ones. We have tried out two different spelling books (Rod & Staff Spelling, and MCP Spelling), and they didn't help her in any way. In fact she hated them. I have heard great things about this program, and was just wondering if anyone here liked it.
I have only used the 6th grade level and at this level they don't teach or review any rules. I don't know if they do in the lower levels or not. Sorry, not much help. But if there is anything else, just ask.
mom24boys, what do your kids as well as yourself like about it. Is it fun, does it keep their interest? Do they look forward to spelling?
I have one son using ARFS. We like it because it has a story that you read that has the spelling words in it. Then he takes a pretest on Spellingcity on Monday and then each day of the week there are different activities to do with the words. Like Hide and Seek, Cross words, Word Shapes, Spell your words with popcorn, "Write your words in Fancy Fonts", Word Seeks, Matching, Missing letters. Anyway, you probably get the point. Different activities each day and they change from week to week, but there is repeats of games about every 3-4 wks. I think. Then on Fri. he takes another test on Spellingcity. HTH
