Dh and I were talking last night regarding a language program. I didn't know that Rosetta Stone was so expensive. Does anyone know where I could get it at a discounted rate?

I don't think that you could buy it used. Something in User Agreement, forbids it from being resold, I think.

Personally, I'm not sure that RS is really worth the money....What language are you trying to learn?

LiveMocha is a service alot like RS, only its free. (Or was free, I think the lower levels are still free)

You can call Rosetta Stone directly and ask them what kind of discounts they can give you. When I bought mine they gave me a lower price than what was offered online.

We use an online language program called "Mango Languages". It is offered through our local public library. You may want to check into it, or see what your library has to offer.

Good to know. We have mango language at our local library as well. I never heard of live mocha I will definately keep that in mind when we make our descision. I want my kids to learn Latin and the kids want to learn Italian. So, we are leaning towards Italian if that what they want to do. I think it will be sorta hard to learn Italian since my family is from Italy and we use to speak Italian when I was younger with my grandparent. But, since I have forgotten a lot of it. Or maybe just maybe it will be easier. I know that dialect can be different and that is what I am nervous about. Thank you!

I have used live mocha and rosetta stone. Live mocha wasn't as comprehensive. I spent 4 hrs on it and got "The woman is fat" out of it. But with the same amount of time in Rosetta Stone, I understood how to talk about men, women, children etc (just like live mocha), but the used usefully vocabulary. So that I was already making sentances that I might one day use. Also, the free portion of live mocha doesn't last long. Then you either have to buy or spend hours and hours marking other peoples work.

We are finding Rosetta Stone well worth the money. It's more well rounded, and I feel like I'm retaining it more. For kids, it gets into complicated sentance structure quickly, so it might not be worth buying the upper levels for young ones.

When you wonder about dialect, I also think you should call Rosetta Stone and ask them. They will send you a free demo CD so you can try the first level too.

I bought Rosetta Stone used, not knowing it couldn't be resold. I will NEVER buy a program again that I can't resell!!! Once I buy it, it is MINE, and I should be able to sell it to whomever I want. I will also say that it didn't work all that well with us.

I have used Rosetta stone personally and thought it was great. I used it in college when I went abroad. It was relatively knew then and I am sure it has improved. I am not sure how well it would be for younger students. Good luck, I think I am leaning towards latin for my younger ones. The research I have done has claimed latin is the basis for the romance languages. Once it is learned it is easy to pick up these languages. Just a thought that might be helpful. Good luck finding what works for you and your family.

That's pretty much how I feel as well. I mean, we have certainly gotten our money's worth because we've been doing 3 years of Japanese, but I HATE their customer service.

RS is a good program but he's tired of Japanese now and wants German for next year - I've already decided to go for Tell Me More. It too is pricey, but we really need a change. I don't think you can resell it either - and yes that ticks me off - but he'll take German all the way through high school and it will be worth the money.
