Does anyone use a phonics book for 1st grade as well as spelling? What is your favorite to use? I've been looking into explode the code and a reason for spelling. Also what is a favorite for K? I have been using the My Father's World Curriculum and I feel as though my 2nd grader got a bad start in both phonics and spelling. I don't want to go down that same road again in the fall. Any ideas would be great!
For K, we used; ETC & Hooked on Phonics. For 1st, we are using HOP & Horizons spelling/vocabulary and still some ETC in there because he enjoys doing it.
We're using clicknkids.com (phonics and spelling) abeka handbook for reading & Abeka readers All about spelling starfall.com Bob books Plus a few other websites... What don't we use!?!? LOL
I use Hooked on Phonics and Explode the Code workbooks as well. There is also something called The Phonics Game that is really good, it is presented as a game rather than a curriculum. Bob Jones beginnings is also a good program for K5. My dd didn't respond to it very well, but I think she wasn't ready to read yet. Overall though it is a good complete reading/phonics program.
I am using a phonics (Rod and Staff) and spelling (Evan-Moore) with my first grader right now. I started the year with just a phonics program and recently added a spelling program.
Handwriting Without Tears is what we used for handwriting, as well as Draw Write Now....adds in writing, reading & art
I use McRuffy. It has the phonics, handwriting, spelling, writing, reading all of it. Also it is a really great program.
The starfall.com website has great free stuff. They also now have a phonics work book and some other materials in print that you can order for K. I am loving it with my little guy right now. We started their print stuff in January. The print book is better once they know the letter sounds and names really solidly. But the website is great from 3 yrs and up.
