How have you determined your child's learning style? Does your child fit into one of the standard categories or something else?
I was completely wrong. I thought mine was an auditory learner. Nope. We talked to an educational psychologist who pointed out that he's a visual learner, and suddenly, everything clicked into place. I'm not NEAR as frustrated as I used to be. Yeah, he still picks up things in other styles, but visual is his main one, for sure. I wonder if learning style is something that changes over the years or changes based on subject matter. Does anyone know? I've wondered that about myself many times. I don't think mine has changed very much, but for certain subjects (like history), my learning style seems to vary.
I think my son's is mainly kinesthetic. I think it is important to know their strengths, but not get too caught up in them. Sure, let the learning take place in the way that is best for the most part-just don't think that is the only way they will learn. I am a hands on person, but I also learn well with reading information. I think I do better with hands on, but... who knows? I didn't hear these buzz words when I was in school. I just knew I had to do what they wanted me to and I learned how to "look" like I was a good student. I also think it is important to know their passions. If they are passionate about something, they will learn a lot without a lot of stress.
Will this help? Just came across this recently on the bbc web site... www.open2.net/survey/learningstyles/ It is a survey but is all completely anonymous but tells you exactly what you are? If you google what type of learning style there are many quizzes and online tests to do for free but I hope this helps. SS
Got me started Went off to google again and found this....scooting down looks good although not tried it... http://kids.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Learning_Style_Test_for_Children But has all sorts on there too Hope they help
If a student sees it, hears it, and says/writes it, he will retain a majority of the information. That is how I try to teach my lessons. In that way, it covers all learning styles. If you can't figure out or are unsure of which learning styles your kids are, you could try that method. With whatever program I am using, I try to first talk about it to explain it to my child (verbal learner), write it out on my dry erase board (visual learner), and then either have them talk about it with me or write something to show they know it (helps all types). I think you can use this method with most of the programs out there, so you don't have to buy different programs for different kids' learning styles.
I thought my oldest DD was auditory because she talks ALL THE TIME! Had her tested by a ed psych and she's visual/kinesthetic. Her talking is part of the "movement" thing she needs because her mouth is moving.
