Do you let your kids write in their books?

I determine whether he can write in it or not depending on how much it cost and how well it will resell if not written in.

If it is relatively inexpensive-then I let him write in it. We use Vocabulary from the Root up and I let him write in those-not a lot of money.

For the math u see books we have used in the past-I didn't let him write in them. Boy, I am glad. I sold two complete sets in the past few months and got a good amount for them. Selling only pieces of them would have not been so profitable. The same with TT, I am going to be able to sell my pre-algebra for $120. I could probably sell it for more on the internet (I know someone who sold a TT set for $165), but this is for a friend.

So, my advice is to keep whole sets of expensive stuff in good shape to be able to sell it and make up some of the money. :D

Oh you mean workbooks lol I thought from the heading you meant books in general. :p Just the cheap workbooks otherwise we do it orally or I copy it onto the board for them to do.

It depends what it is. If it's cheaper to buy a new one than to waste printer paper/ink, then I'll let him write in them and get new copies for the little one. If not, I'll save them for the little one, and then sell them later.

Generally I have them copy the answers onto another sheet of paper. This enables me to have all of the kids use the same books.

I thought about using a method that would allow for us not to write in our MUS workbooks, but in the end I determined that the workbooks would be consumable for us. It has been valuable to go back at times and use the unused pages for extra practice. But even if we never open them again, my ds struggles with math at times and having to copy all of his work onto a sheet of paper would compound his struggle exponentially. ;) It is not legal to copy pages in most books anyway. The ones who allow it express your right to copy. If they don't express it, you aren't supposed to copy pages at all. I understand there are other methods, though. (use transparency films, hand copy, etc.)

There are a few books Ems is allowed to write in. Even if the books are cheap, I have had a lot of luck selling them. So if I can keep them in shape for resale purposes, then great. Once in a while there is a book that will actually cost me to sell and ship so it isn't worth it. These are generally the books Ems is allowed to write in.

I cut a page protector and slide it on a page and let my son write in the "book" with wet erase markers. Once I review the work I rinse the page protector, dry it, and put it on another page. I'm even doing this for some cheaper items. My boys prefer markers over pencils anyway.

I don't do this to resell them, but because I have three kids who will need to use the materials. I don't do it for math workbooks though. You need a pencil and eraser there.

We write in our workbooks that are intended to be written in. We never write in a textbook, even Abeka ones that are expected to be written in. If there are worksheets and tests that are okay to copy, I'll do that. On occasion, I have re-typed pages of this or that when I thought it could have been arranged better on the page or I didn't like some of the test questions or want to combine them in some way, or if there are quizzes or stuff in the TM but I don't have the student book for... If there's even a cheap-o workbook that I find I really like (like from WallyWorld or something) I'll keep it and copy it because I know that finding one is often a one-shot deal and when you want it again, you can't find it.

We use transparency sheets over workbook pages with wet erase markers if it's a book I can not copy. If it's a book I can copy then I just make copies for each child, and if it's a math book they write in those. If it's a texbook that's meant to be written in we copy the questions onto paper and answer them, or just do it orally. If it's a workbook that I know I'll use for the baby when he's ready then I copy the pages for the child who's currently using it, and then the baby will write in it.

We write in the workbooks. I have thought about saving for the next boy down but we haven't done that so far. I had hoped to reuse the LA answer book but Abeka changed editions. It didn't matter because we decided to go another way anyway.

We write in our books. I have no one to pass them down to. With regards to selling them, I never considered it. I guess its just easier for us to use the books the way they are ment to be used. Maybe, because we are just coming out of ps and the kids are so use to it. I have never sold anything as of yet. I have given half of the things we don't use away. I have a lot of computer classes that I would give away as well but, with SOS you can't. I have alway given and said you reap what you sow. Maybe, I should think about selling them. Who knows.....

I do the same thing. I always seem to have someone to pass along books to. The only things I've sold so far are my Math-U-See teacher sets to my best friend at a steal (she insisted on paying for them). I can't tell you how many things I've received from others. I used to get packages from an aunt who homeschooled for a time. I never had any idea what was in them. Sometimes, a few years down the road I would end up needing something she sent me. Not a bad trade. ;)

With our math books, I just have him write the stuff on a piece of paper. I did that in school, and it is really no problem.

I would love to give away stuff, but it is a great help for me to sell. I am a single mom so it helps tremendously.

For the MUS Epsilon I think I sold it for $50 plus shipping. It was the whole package and the fraction overlays. For MUS pre-algebra I am selling it for $90: the whole set plus a set of blocks and a set of decimal inserts. New, that would be $140. So she is saving some money and I am getting some money back.

I won't resell if it is not allowed. I know that both TT and MUS allow reselling because they either say it outright or they refer people where to buy their stuff used.

We write in all workbooks, mostly so I have a record of their work and can track progress. Also, it is just easier. Sometimes I mark teacher books with pencil that can be erased. I figure that I bought all of these materials and that I would use them to make my life easier. If I can erase and resell, great! If not I am okay with that too.

for us it depended on the books and if we needed to reuse it with another child. Ds2 -13 is blessed at being my last hs child so he gets tow rite in and on anything I don't intend to sell or give to another hs er

Horizons we did, and some workbooks. As said before, it's almost cheaper to buy one than to copy it. But, especially if it's something written by a hs'ing mom instead of a company, I'll buy another workbook to help support "our own". We don't write in the TT books; I want a complete set!

The only one we don't work problems in or answer questions is Teaching Textbooks. And that's only so I can sell it for a better price each year.
