I am loooking for some suggestions for my 4th grader. For K-3rd we've used ABeka. I like this curriculum and how thorough it is. However, I feel like there is a lot of "busy" work and it can make for a long day for a child with ADHD. I've done some researching online, but it's hard to tell from a 3 or 4 page sample of the books, if they will be a good fit or not. If I can't find anything that catches my eye, I will stay with ABeka. Just wondering what other homeschoolers use(d) and like. Thanks in advance.
My personal favorite is Christian Light Education. They have lots of samples. www.clp.org It's not colorful, but it's very good.
We have always used ABeka for all the subjects. I was thinking of going a little more eclectic this year. I have heard good things about CLE. I will check them out.
I use Teaching Textbooks for math for my visual/spatial learner [who, as a result, also has a short attention span]. I use Easy Grammar for grammar and Sequential Spelling for-- obviously-- spelling. LOL We use Veritas Press for history, literature, and Bible. We alternate between Apologia for science and Real Science 4 Kids. I bet your ADHD child would really enjoy RS4K - the books are very appealing to look at, and they have lots of experiments that are usually able to be done with stuff around your house. We use BBC Dance Mat for typing, and Latin for Children for foreign language. We're using Critical Thinking Company and English from the Roots Up for Vocabulary.
I suggest looking at CLE, Horizons math, Learning Adventures Unit Study (it covers every subject except math), T Textbooks, SOS Spanish.... these are all things we are/have used.
I like unit studies for the ones with difficulty paying attention. But besides learning adventures, I have never found one I really like...the boys really liked learning adventures but I felt it was too mom intensive...but I would use it again for grade school. We are doing middle school and I am trying to train them OUT of needing me so much.
