We have been trying to save more the past year and have decided to not go on a week long vacation. Instead we are hoping to do some day trips or a 3-day weekend. Any simple, fun ideas would be greatly appreciated. Any and all ideas welcome, even a fun, eventful "staycation." Thanks for the help.

It will have to be a staycation for us this year too. Freddy is going to need eye surgery in about 6 months and we are going to need to save up for the time he is out of work. We will still enjoy our summer. Hope you find lots of fun things to do. Beth

If you live anywhere near a touristy area, play tourists-- see the monuments, parks, etc. that are around you.

Camping is an inexpensive option, too.

If you're in Ohio, we've got some awesome state parks. Plus there's Cedar Point and King's Island. We really can't help if we don't have any idea where you're at!

Try to find a local bulletin board and post on there for ideas. You'll find all kinds of places you probably didn't even know existed in the area! :)

I second this idea... you could rent room for one night to just "get away"...

zoos are fun, if you have one in your area or theme parks.

When we lived near Disney, we did those minivacations instead. They were great - DH would take one or two week days off, we'd drive over on Sunday (cheaper rates on rooms) and hit the parks on low attendance days.

    Not near Disney now LOL

A couple years ago, we did a staycation. Honestly, I think our kids enjoyed that more than any other vacation. It is the ONLY vacation they have specifically requested again by name. They liked Vegas and Disney and Great Wolf Lodge, but they ask, "Can we have a staycation again?" I'm not sure why - maybe it was because we were always sleeping at home (and that year, we did a VERY heavy load of work-related-travel), maybe because it was all "short" attractions (so they didn't get overloaded).

We've done weekend getaways to big cities that are close to us. We stay in a hotel and go do kid friendly things- zoo, museums, hiking, biking, movies, etc. We did that a few times last year and it was great!

One of our favorites was to drive a few hours to Phoenix to attend the state fair on a discount wristband (unlimited rides) day. Local county fair had nothing on the state fair. Plus, we were able to have family meet up with us there. Then, we crashed at a hotel nearby. A must for us is one with free breakfast. Many times, that makes the price of a hotel seem more reasonable since you don't have to go out to breakfast. As others have stated, not sure where you are, but let us know and we may have more ideas.

I'm assuming you can go somewhere with snow.......go skiing......... which I personally would not do, but I am figuring most people are more adventurous than myself.

We tend to do a lot of camping and fishing when we stay in our area. In the past though we have also enjoyed spending just a night or two in a hotel near museums and other attractions that we can enjoy.

Thank you all for your ideas. My DH and I will go over the list and decide on some fun things. Homeschoolspot comes through as always! :)
