Maybe some of you have done this. but it's new to me. Recently ordered travel guides on individual states. We never travel so it doesn't help there! What it is does do is supply my DDs with lots of facts & interesting info on the states & it's FREE! Yes, FREE! Just do a search for Tennessee(state of your choice) welcome center or travel guides. Most states have thick magazines (you can provide your address for mailing to you or download) that include loads of states facts & geographical info. We prefer mailing. I have these ordered in my kids names so it makes it more fun when they come in the mail. Learning lots about Oregon right now. 10th largest state, 800 vineyards, hazelnut is state nut, Oregon has no sales tax, all Oregon gas stations are required to pump thier gas. So much to read & worthy of keeping for future studies. Blessings!
I wanted to share this site with you too. My girls love it! http://www.learninggamesforkids.com/us-state-games.html
I learned that quite a while ago (because I NEEDED it quite a while ago!). Some were very helpful, some were not. But I sure did get a LOT that year!!! If you're a member of EnchantedLearning.com, they have lots of stuff on states. They've a mapping activity for each state, a flag and state seal to color (explaining the symbolism involved), and possibly something else...? (It's been a while since we did that, lol!)
That is a really cool idea. You could also tie this in with your reading curriculum and map skills. That's a win win situation! Definitely gonna use this when we get to it. Thanks!
Have you tried 50 State Fridays? Kris at Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers has wonderful ideas and links on how she teaches her children about the 50 U.S. States. She calls it 50 State Fridays. We found out our public library has the entire series of U.S. geography for children. This DVD series is for grades k-4. Each DVD explores a number of different states and shows the culture, people, climate, fun activities and foods that are popular in that state. It is worth looking into for U.S. Geography.
Thanks so much for the extra states ideas. I will definitely put them to use. Trying to not make the study of the states an REAL subject. Just following their state interest & making it casually educational. No worksheets or note taking. None of that but the mapping stuff is so fun that they don't even realize they are doing work. Isn't the unlimited boundaries of hs wonderful? Blessings!
