Can you please share how you decide on your reading "musts" for each year. Do you use other sites reading lists or do you just have your own favorites? If you use other sites could you please share them here?! I am trying to put together a list of "must" reads for 4th grade. Please share yours!
ReadKiddoRead.com. It's broken down by grade levels and interests. It's not a list of classics, I'm not big on classics simply because my kids find them boring. This is a more contemporary list.
I'm more of a "Oh, that sounds good!" type of person. I've also got lots of book lists to correspond with history, though there's NO WAY we could read them all! If I'm really stuck for something, I'll ask the librarian for recomendations, or check in the back of "Honey for a Child's Heart".
I also uses Sonlight, recommendations from people on wtm and others for studies like science and history. Now for just book reading I am one who goes to the library and grabs books. You never know what kind of great books you get when you don't stress so much on finding the perfect book.
Jo Anna, that's so true. I have found more good stuff by accident than I ever did actively searching.
In the past I would just put together a reading list much in the way that many of you are describing. 4 yrs. ago I stumbled on Biblioplan, and we pretty much stick to their literature suggestions for school purposes. For that matter, they also have extra book suggestions for advanced readers, and further study. We read those too! All of their suggestions have been delicious! Very often I find the books at the library, but then my kids love them so much I end up buying them on Amazon. When I was piecing together our reading list I felt like we wasted time on too many duds. http://biblioplan.net/
I like to pick the Sonlight readers! BUT...there are so many great lists out there from various libraries. It takes some time and research but I just key "#th Grade Reading List" and usually tons of lists come up. Some even have reviews and stuff. Also, www.bookadventure.com will help you pick by age, genre, etc. HTH!
I do some research and talk to other homeschoolers and come up with a list. Its a little bit of work, but I enjoy learning and knowing other people's opinions and ideas.
If you are looking for books to go with specific time periods, I would also recommend All Through the Ages.
If you're looking for a specific time frame, let us know what that time frame is. I've got some awesome book lists I've put together from various sources. I actually have a notebook with pages I've printed off from here and there. The children's librarians run and hide when they see me walk in with my notebook, lol!!!
