Yesterday I blogged about the new 52 Books in 52 Weeks challenge I found. http://thosecrazyhomeschoolers.blogspot.com/2011/03/better-late-than-never-52-books52-weeks.html And it got me thinking, is there any reading challenge like that around for kids? Different grade levels? Anything? I think having a challenge would help my child keep on track and reading in her spare time. Just curious.
Closest I can think of is the library's Summer Reading Program, which really isn't a challenge at all for my kids. They're usually done in less than half the time.
You can participate in the Pizza Hut book it program and set your own goals for them, but this is only during the "normal" school year. How about starting your own book club for the kiddos?
We've thought of a book club for kiddos but most parents are reluctant to add a new commitment to their children's lives. I keep trying though. We usually participate in our library's summer program as well. I was kind of looking for an online challenge, kind of like the one I'm participating in. Maybe I should start one... hmmm...
I encourage DD to learn reading via an online reading program on beestar. The weely worksheests are full of interesting stories, real life word problems helping her thinking. If she does a good work, her name will appear on the honor roll and she will also get kinds of ribands. DD enjoy this very much. Lisa
Six Flags has a program in the Fall that will run thru the spring. Once you completed an extra 630? Hrs of reading the student and the teacher both get a ticket to six flags. Since my husband and I both share the teaching I put one of our kids under him then the other under my name. I think it's called read to succeed. I think you have to live 100 miles from one of the parks...double ck that though.
Thanks for all the recommendations! I haven't found something that meets the needs I'm wanting. I guess we'll just wait for the summer program at the library. Maybe start a chart for her where she can chart her hours and have a reward at the end. I don't know. I always wish I had started a list from birth practically of the books I've read throughout my life. I'd love to know how many that is...
This is what the 6 Flags website said about the location, "Read to Succeed is a free educational program sponsored by Six Flags to inspire kids in grades K through 6 to engage in recreational reading. Students who complete six hours of recreational, nonschool-related reading are eligible to earn a free admission ticket to a participating Six Flags theme park. Teachers whose classes participate and complete the program are also eligible to earn a free ticket. Schools must be within a 250-mile radius of a participating Six Flags theme park in order to participate."
Thanks for looking that up with Six Flags! I was distracted...imagine that! Yes 6 hours. I was thinking minutes! Lol! Other theme parks may be open to such a program to boost business..wouldn't hurt to ck.
