A very rude and anti-homeschool person informed me this evening that I was failing my son by homeschooling him through high school. No matter what his grades or act scores are he will NEVER receive any scholarships or aide for college. I've never heard of this. I have heard of hs getting scholarships. Have any of you heard that what this person says is true?
all I could do is laugh! That is out-dated, completely untrue info. My son's FAFSA application made it clear hs'ers were acceptable. Do a Google search for hs scholarships.
My daughter is a Junior this year, will be seventeen very shortly. She took her ACT test this past December. Her score was 31. That's the 97th percentile. The schools are knocking our door down wanting to talk with her! (And she's really not any brighter than most of her hs'ing friends!)
I've heard exactly the opposite. Colleges love homeschooled kids because they are out-of-the-box thinkers.
Where do you all find these people who think they can say whatever pops into their head no matter how rude? I am endlessly amazed at the stories I read on here. It just seems like there is a growing percentage of people out there who have lost their mouth-monitor -- that thing that tells them they ought to keep their mouth shut because what their uninformed brain is trying to make them say is both rude and ignorant.
Colleges also recognize the fact that hs'ed kids generally are able to work independently. They don't need the teachers spoon-feeding them everything.
My dd's first college roomie had been homeschooled and got a better scholarship than my dd got, and my dd graduated from a "giftie" high school! BTW, this girl had been homeschooled in Arkansas before it was legal!
Absolutely NOT true! I've honestly lost count of the home school families we know whose children have received scholarships and grants. Now some of the packages were larger than others of course, but that is across the board whether home schooled or not.
I too have friends whose children we hs and got excellet scholarships. But I thought maybe I'm mistaken. Maybe things have changed. Granted the source this not so nice person got the info from has children in college that did not receive anything. They are smart but I think it is due to the college they are attending. I went to this small college several years ago and they do not offer much in the way of help other than pell grants. You cant even take out a gov. student loan to attend there. I guess it just was the icing on the cake with this person. She is constantly saying ugly comments about homeschooling and I cannot limit my exposure to her due to my children being heavily involved in an actvity where we must see her daily. I have held my tongue until now but I'm afraid that will not last much longer. My children are so not the norm. They are very comfortable with who they are, but unfortunately it's not the norm. Where I live anything not the "norm" is treated like a virus and must be taken down. This person and many others have issues with this. I know it is their own insecurities, but it does get old dealing with it day in and day out. Thank all of you for reminding me that I am not insane and that my son will be just fine if I hs through high school.
