We are moving to Texas sometime this month and I really need to be pointed in the right direction as far as brushing up on my Texas home school law. We will actually be in San Antonio, so if anyone lives there and can give me any info about what types of home school offerings there are, I would greatly appreciate it. I have been home schooling in the Atlanta area for four years and was finally getting to know all that was offered. Now I feel like I am starting all over and it is slightly overwhelming. Thanks!
Texas is eeeeeeeeeeeasy! No reporting of any kind! There's a huge homeschool presence in San Antonio, too. My in-laws are in that area, so we get down there 2-3x a year. You can find groups here: http://www.homeschoolclassifieds.com/groups_activities.asp?nm=Texas&st=TX.
Homeschools are private schools in Texas. Basically, you just do your own thing--- no paperwork to submit, no hours to track, no testing, etc. You might check out the Texas Homeschool Coalition's website to look around: http://www.thsc.org
Texas is so easy, I almost feel guilty! You don't report, log hours, test,or anything. I'm in No.Central TX. I can't remember right off the top of my head, but I'm almost certain there are at least 2 others here who are in the S.A. area. Welcome to the Lone Star state!
Welcome Housemom4, You've probably already know about FEAST (Family Education Alliance of South Texas) but if not here is the website: http://www.homeschool-life.com/tx/homeschoolfeast/ I'm sure they can answer your questions about co-ops, groups, etc, in the San Antonio area, until some San Antonians on this site pop in.
Texas is easy to home school in. Like everybody said little rules, no oversight. They don't even know my kids exist. There are several here who are in Texas, maybe no just SA but close. SA is a nice town! We are going there for Easter to visit family.
You will love Texas. Sea World and Six Flags have homeschool Days, and they do a re-enactment of the Battle of the Alamo, there are air shows, and great dude ranches outside San Antonio. There are co-ops galore, and the annual conference is just a few weeks away. They have a great zoo, and children's museum, the Witte. The gulf is only 4 hours away, and Austin has lots of great museums and things to do also. If you want to get plugged in before you move, there is a yahoogroup by the name of SanAntonioHSers The Moms there will help you get situated. Sorry I can't give you the url, I'm new to this forum and they have rules, which I can understand. Do you know what part of SA you will be moving, that can have a bearing on finding homeschool friends. Welcome to Texas! Blessings, Jube
Thank you all! You have been extremely helpful. We will be around the 1604/281 area, I am hoping Stone Oak, but we will see what we can get. I am horrible about paper work so the relaxed rules sounds wonderful! We can't wait to get there Lisa
Texas is easy peasy Sometimes I wonder if we're actually accomplishing anything, but just try and check the scope and sequence to stay somewhat on track! Wish I were closer to the fantastic resources you'll have access to in your part of the state, but we make-do with Prairie Dog town and the Landmark we have Good Luck and welcome to Texas!
That's a great area. Check into the Home Team support group. I have a couple of friends in the group. I live NW, so it's too far for me, but I hear great things about it.
I lived in that area from the time I was in 4th grade through the age of 26! LOL I was in Hollywood Park and then Encino Park. I used to know the area very, very well, but it's grown up so much out there that it looks foreign to me now. My brother and SIL still live down there--- closer to the Sea World area. Traffic's pretty hideous down there, and it's a tourist town-- so you get what comes with that. But, overall, it's much like living in/near any major city. You definitely have access to the best Tex-Mex around- hands down, and the history is incredible.
That is funny! I lived in Encino Park with my parents when I was in high school, I went to Churchill then. When I got married we moved to Boston, moved back to the Schertz area and now we are headed back again. It is a small world!
I know that Texas is one of the best states to homeschool in. The only reason I had to write a letter is because my son had already been in the public schools here before I decided to pull him. In my area (south of Dallas) they were great about it and even sent me a letter saying something like they hoped it went well. I was surprised, because even though they couldn't stop me from homeschooling, I have heard that many public/private schools try to discourage it. I believe that all we "have to" teach is English, math, spelling and good citizenship. It doesn't say how many years or what level or anything. I don't know why the oddball subject of good citizenship is in there, but I believe that the way we are raising our kids probably gives them a much better chance to become good citizens.
Hey, I went to Churchill! 1989 graduate. LOL And my mom moved to Schertz right after I got married. She was there about 5 years then moved back to her hometown to be with her siblings.
