Any other Catholic home schoolers out there? Lol. We are semi new to home schooling and are using a completely Catholic, more "classical" curriculum.

Anybody else doing the same? What have been your experience with your curriculum choice? What activities are your children involved in outside of the home? Does your home parish have a home school group that you are involved in?

    Hello!

We are Catholic homeschoolers and have been for the past 14 years! We used to live in MI and did a lot at our local church, but since we moved to CA, our church serves an older community so not so many homeschoolers at church, unfortunately.

We use a lot of literature and I use Sonlight or Vertias press for literature ideas - we just modify how we use it. A great resource is Catholic Heritage Curricula:

We do a lot outside the home right now -- we do a weekly sports collective, piano, and tae kwon do. We do a lot of things with other Christian homeschoolers, and it works for us pretty well.

    Good luck and happy homeschooling!

Thanks. When ordering the books we used CHC and Kolbe Orthodox as guides. We ended up actually purchasing older, more classic text books (that my husband remembered from his school days in the Catholic schools... using CHC and Kolbe as more of a reference for subjects and lessons (lol).
We live in the south and in a more predominately protestant area. BJU (no offense against the BJU users and followers) is directly across the street from us and there is a largely anti Catholic feel to most of area. We have little in the way of Catholic churches. I am hoping that we can find a Catholic home school group in the area, but so far have only found admittedly protestant home school groups.
Finding it a bit hard to make any fellow Catholic home school friends... or even those that are tolerant of a Catholic home schooler.
Thank you for answering my post!!! God bless.

We're Catholic homeschoolers from the south as well. I don't mind the protestant groups because my husband is protestant, and I am a catholic convert. Of course, I prefer to do things my own way...and I don't like some of the stipulations some homeschool groups place on families. We use olvs for our curriculum and keepers of the faith for life learning activities. We go on monthly field trips, and I made a star chart for our kids to earn a monthly outing for bowling, movies, or skating. At the end of the school year, we take a weekend trip to Wild Adventures in Valdosta, Ga. My son plays football, basketball, and baseball through the rec dept, and my daughter does cheerleading and t-ball. We have an 11 month old daughter as well. Between all that and church activities, our kids STAY busy and have active social lives. I know homeschool groups provide much more like parties, graduation ceremonies, proms, etc. but they require a lot from parents. For now, I like the system we have in place, and maybe we'll join a group when our children are older so they don't miss out on prom, lol!!!

Veritaspress.com ... it's protestant, but I think you might find it more Catholic-friendly than BJU or Abeka. It's also a a classical approach to education. (I know you've found your curriculum for now, but I thought I'd mention it, because it's always fun to look!)
