I know a couple of you have used My Father's World curriculum, and I had a question for you. Did you couple this curriculum with another reading curriculum or did MFW teach reading just fine??

DH and I were looking at HeadSprout, but it's PRETTY expensive, since our 100 EZ lessons is just barely getting us by. Have any of you used a cheaper reading program that was just as fun and educational? (I tried this one called Reading Eggs, I think and DS didn't like it very much :( )

    Thanks in advance guys!

The MFW I've used is not K or 1st so it's not the teaching reading. Hoping you get your answers! I've heard good things about the Kinder/1st on here, though.

Also, I can't remember if you've asked before, but have you seen www.starfall.com ? Free teach-to-read resource that starts at teaching letter/letter sounds. Moves through short vowel sounds, to long vowel sounds. There's free workbook downloads (IF you'd want them...but based on your son's age, I'd let him learn to read and hold off on writing). All three of my kids learned to read using Starfall and absolutely love reading, and are at least 2 grades above where they should be. I owe it all to Starfall. :)

We just finished up MFW K with my dd(4). She's READING!!! So, I can't say anything bad about that! She is naturally disposed in that direction however, so I'm sure that helped some. We've really enjoyed the whole program. We're taking a year doing "my mother's world" (my own curriculum concoction) before going on to MFW 1 - gotta catch that handwriting ability up with the reading (an area she's NOT naturally disposed in LOL!)!

I'm using both MFW K and MFW 1st. I wouldn't really add anything to it, I would just make sure to spend plenty of time reading other things as well. My dd7 can read the MFW stuff great, but her confidence isn't there with other books yet (although I KNOW she can read them). My dd5 didn't know any letter sounds at all when we started and even didn't know many of the lower case letters. He now knows all the vowel sounds, 13 consonant sounds, and can sound out CVC words. He's got a whole stack of sight words he's learned too. I love both of those programs! I wish I could say the same for ECC. :(

We used MFW to teach reading to my 6 year old. I liked the reading and found it much more suited to us than 100 Easy Lessons. My son is just finishing up MFW 1st grade and can read, albeit pretty slowly. My oldest two have said they wish I would have used that with them.

My youngest is finishing up MFW K and can read short vowel words without any issues. He'll be starting 1st in a few months, so I can't speak to that yet.
With my older two, I didn't know about MFW when they were learning to read, so they started out with MFw at the older levels. My middle son taught himself to read, but I've been filling in a few holes with Explode the Code as necessary. My oldest was taught with ABeka at a wonderful Christian school, but I learned last year that she also had holes - especially in spelling. It wasn't the fault of the curriculum, she just needs more review. All About Spelling is filling those holes nicely now and working well for her younger brother also. I promised my youngest that he can start working with AAS soon as he's chopping at the bit to be with his older siblings.

I did order MFW's K and it didn't work out at all. I hate to say but it just wasn't going well. I was better off with 100 EZ Lessons and hearing her cry about each lesson. I sold it shortly after buying it. I went back to my first choice (passed on 100 EZ Lessons after buying MFW) Ordinary Parent's Guide To Teaching Reading and she's in 'heaven'. She likes learning to read now. Go figure. OPGTR worked for oldest (girl) but not for second (boy) and now working for third (girl). Now she has her Reading and she is back to working alongside the others with MFW's ECC

This is my first post! I have a 6 year old that completed MFW 1st grade last summer (for the phonics program!!!) and a 5 year old beginning it now (skipped MFW K) with ease!
1st grade rocks! It is great for phonics, reading, narrating, and writing!

There is something free that rocks as well: starfall dot com. Both of my kids (girl and boy) were able to begin MFW 1st grade before the age of 5, because they were reading well using Starfall at the ages of 3 and 4.
