Next year I will be homeschooling my ds 1st grade...many thanks to all of you who helped with curriculum advice :D

We also have a daughter who goes to ps and does fantastic (ds has adhd so small classes or individual attention suits him better). I'm looking for some work for her to supplement over the summer.

She will be entering 2nd grade next year, and I'd like to strengthen her in math and writing/LA before going. My son will be doing work everyday in the summer (he needs to work on his reading skills) so I thought if I could do workbooks each day with both kids for about 20 minutes that would be plenty over the summer and it would help her get a start on what I know will probably be a challenging year of 2nd grade.

She's an excellent student but rushes through her work so she ends up missing things for very dumb reasons  I'd like to help her in LA...this is her weakest subject right now. Writing and punctuation especially.

She also struggles occassionally in math so it would be so beneficial for her to get a jump on math concepts.

Can anyone recommend anything good for summer enrichment...she does great with workbooks so I'd like to do something like that so we can do a few pages each day :D

Borders and Walmart and several places have those "Summer Bridge" workbooks. They usually have recommendations for summer reading, reinforce math and L/A skills etc.

    :)

I like all of the Spectrum workbooks for supplemental stuff. I wouldn't use them as an entire year's curriculum, but for brushing up or getting ahead, they're wonderful, and they're relatively cheap.

Thanks for the suggestions. I went to borders this morning and didn't see anything in that mess they call the 'school zone' that was useful for 2nd grade. I saw the spectrum books but they didn't have the math or writing...just reading for 2nd grade and really all else I saw for her age range was a school zone big book which I looked through and didn't see anything that was going to be new or challenging I thought would be beneficial.

I'll keep looking...thanks for the suggestions. I wanted to see the spectrum before purchasing. I use them now to supplement for K math and they are great just wondering how they are for 2nd grade??? Wanted to look at them to see before purchasing.

Any opinions on time4learning for the summer? She likes computer work too :)

Take a peek at Critical Thinking's workbooks at www.criticalthinking.com. They have ones for math as well as language arts. Maybe something there will fit.

Thanks again to all of you for your suggestions...I really appreciate your feedback ;)

We don't have a Mardel's unfortunately. I ordered two spectrum workbooks from amazon and another math workbook so we'll see how it goes.

We do Summer Bridge and I love them. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes a day and covers a variety of subjects.

CLE does workbooks. I haven't used them (yet). My DS will be going into 1st this year also (our first year HS'ing), and we plan on using CLE. I love the fact that they are small bites of information, and I can let him do a little bit, run around for a while, and then come and do a little bit more, etc. My son is not ADHD, but he is still very active, and doesn't tolerate sitting still for very long. Good luck this summer! We plan on starting this summer too. I don't want there to be too big of a gap between K and 1st grade, which it seems like there usually is.

    Thanks...I'll check out borders.com

I use CLE now with my son for learn to read (he knows how to read but it isn't his strong suit so I am going back over using this program)...he really likes it. My son is capable of sitting and doing work that interests him for good lengths of time. Anything he is bored with though and all it is a battle and complaints. Today was a hard day with him after he got home from school...I told my dh tonight I didn't know if I could have him home all day because I was at my wits end by the end of the night  Im sure there will be those days no doubt LOL

I have CLE math for him too I just haven't started it yet. I want to really concentrate on the reading for right now then once I get through it I'll start some other things.

Good luck with hsing and CLE next year...so far so good with CLE here :D

Rainbow Resource has a ton of stuff. But I highly recommend spectrum. RR carries K-8.
