Hi all. I'm brand new here. I am a children's literature enthusiast and I incorporate it all over my lesson plans. In history, Bible, even science. We do classics, Newberys, new releases, whatever. In fact, tween and YA books make up most of MY pleasure reading. I love it! Ironically, I have a struggling reader.

While I am well-versed in more advanced books for kids, I'm not-so-much in early, independent chapter books. Looking for ideas for my soon-to-be fourth grade boy who reads at a third grade level. He loves The Magic Treehouse (fortunately there are about 200 of those!), but does anyone have other suggestions?

Note: I will be heading to the mountains with no internet for a couple weeks, so if I don't respond right away, you know why. But I will read all your suggestions when I get home.

    Thanks so much!
    Michelle

    Hi Michelle,

some younger level chapter books that our kids really enjoyed were The Time Warp Trio (great because you can work them in with history too), Canadian Flyers (like Magic Treehouse but Canadian), The Bailey School Kids (two levels of chapter books).

We have found series are great for a struggling reader if you can get them into the series. It helps to keep them reading. Our daughter is not as strong a reader as some of our other kids and what got her reading more was the Marley books because she is a dog nut.

What kinds of books are you reading to him as well? We have found that our kids enjoy listening to books they could not read on their own.

Anyway that's my two cents woth, hope the suggestions help.

Sounds like my dd! She's a big fan of MTH, too, and struggles with reading!

A to Z Mysteries is another good series! I know there are more but my brain is mush right now! I'll come back if I think of them!

Thank you everybody! I have written these titles down and I'll check them out this summer. Some are familiar, now that I see them. Some are brand new to me.

Leaf, I read lots of books aloud that are WAY over my son's reading level. His listening level is advanced because he's been introduced to so much lit. He just has trouble decoding on his own.

If anyone thinks of more, don't hesitate to share!

I am new here also and also the mother of a struggling reader. Our son really enjoyed the Moongobble series by Bruce Coville. They are funny easy chapter books about a sort of bumbling wizard-in-training with a great heart.

The Chet Gecko series is another good one. The first one is titled, The Chameleon work Chartreuse. It’s the reptilian version of Dragnet.

There is also a series of historic fiction dairy-style books. It's the My Name is America series. You can find a list here...
