We got off to kind of a late start this year. We had planned to start right after Labor Day, but when I ended up in the hospital it ended up being more toward the middle/end of September. Then we took an entire month off at Thanksgiving/Christmas because we were moving, etc. I've always planned on working through June to finish up our curriculum (we've met our required number of days already).

We have been on vacation for the past couple of weeks though, and I'm having a really hard time getting motivated to get back into the swing of things. My brain has gone into summer mode and I can't seem to get it back. I'm torn between cracking the whip to finish this up and just forgetting it. After all, I never remember a PS class where we actually covered the whole book. :)

What do you do if you finish your time/day requirements before you finish your curriculum?

We always tried to finish a book, no matter how long it took us to do it. (That is, if we were satisfied with the book.) We never worried about whether it took us longer than 180 days to do it. The opposite was also true. If we finished all of our planned studies in one particular subject earlier than expected, then that subject was officially completed for the school year.

I sympathize! We are just over halfway through our curriculum due to a house fire and then illness, and I've been stressing about finishing it all by the fall. However, I looked over next year's curriculum and have just decided to pick out the essentials in the core subjects to cover so the kids are prepared for next year....I'm finding it hard to be motivated with the beautiful weather too! I'd say if you feel your kids have mastered the grade-level requirements you had for them, don't worry about all the extras...or fit them in over the summer as you have time (and desire). :)

We're kind of in the same boat. I decided we'd finish math, but that's about it.

Good point! I just wanted to add that I don't remember a time in PS when when we covered the whole book OR when I remembered the half of the book we covered anyway:wink: At least in HS'ing we can make sure the kids master what we do cover!

Thanks for all the support! We finally got going around noon today and I feel better about it now. We are going to do only the essentials for now and then pick up the rest during the summer when it's too hot to do anything else. Glad to hear I'm not alone! :)

Hillbillywoman, I LOVE your quote in your signature! Mind if I borrow it for facebook?

My kids are cracking me up, acutally. Because, I shortened 8 weeks of curricula (History/Science/Grammar) into 4 weeks. We're a week and a half into that schedule. They did finish their math curricula, so they only have to do daily drills. My oldest was doing Life Of Fred as a filler, but as she got closer to the end it started blowing her mind - so I let her stop - it was supposed to be fun, not frustrating! :)

But anyway, even though their work is ALREADY doubled up, they're finishing by 10:30 in the a.m. CRACKING ME UP!!!! I keep saying - well, if you do tomorrow's work today, and do 2 days tomorrow, etc. You'll be off for the summer sooner, and they are just not biting!!!! SICK ISN'T IT!!!

I am a little worried about summer boredom, so I've been working on a MAJOR overhaul to our chore system, and plan on making chore training a part of our summer. YUCK, not fun for me now, but in the long run, my house should run like a well oiled machine, right???? LOL!!!!

Also been working on their summer reading lists! :) We're probably going to go to our local church's library a lot this summer. They're open on Weds, so it's a good mid week thing - they have a coffee shop and a library and a play area for the younger kids. Figure we'll hit the library, hang for playing and lunch. My oldest will get bored b/c she's not allowed in the play area anymore - although usually a young toddler will attach themself to her and then the kids mother is "Can you help her in the tubes?" and ends up doing the parent's duty and watches their kid so they can chat with other mothers!!!

    :) lOL :) Summer fun......please.....sooooooooooooooooon.........

Oh well...it will be summer eventually!!!!

My PS teacher friend says they are lucky if they cover 80% of the curriculum - as a rule. So, I'm going through the last bit of our grade 1 math book and trying to hit the last 2 topics, but we are not doing all of it. :)

Well, we are in summer mode too.. I had planned on having school through the summer, but the kids are having a hard time focusing.. My boys are both gone ALL The time since public school let out for summer. They are fishing, swimming, just hanging out with their friends. I told them that school wouldn't interfere with their summer fun but I hadn't anticipated their sudden social boom. LOL.. I still want to at least get math done, but I don't know if that will even happen. Mainly we were doing summer school due to my oldest going into public school next year.. He's been extremely unmotivated this year but now I don't see the point in continuing the fight with him... Hopefully he will be ok next year.. We've been quite relaxed with school and now I'm wishing we hadn't been..

I skip the last part of our math, because it is reviewed in the first part of the next years book, and I will skip the first part of some things, because it is just review of what we finished. Since we don't do a long summer break there isn't a need for it.

I have summer brain I really need a break, we are going to take next week off for day camp. I am excited there should be at least 6 hours next week when I will not have any kids at all. First time in 2 years.
