So my hubby got me a new car last year - a BMW suv. I've never had a really nice car before, so I am geeked.

I was pulling out of the drive in our cul-de-sac yesterday, and there were lots of cars behind me so I kept checking to make sure I didn't hit any, and while I thought I cleared the neighbor's car parked to the side of me on the street, I didn't. I caught his bumper. While there was only a crack in his taillight from me, I tore the front quarter panel of my car!

I have been driving for 20 years and NEVER hit anything! The minute I get a new car, I hit something? I am so upset!!!! I actually had a nervous breakdown when I did it and cried for 20 minutes!

This is my first accident and I just can't get over how miserable I feel! I think the neighbor is out of town, but we called them and left a message, and I left a message with my insurance guy. It is going to cost us about $1000 to get our car fixed, and I have no idea about the neighbors car (that is with insurance!) I feel like i just wasted all that money (I am a bit OCD about money).

Any words of advice or encouragement to make me feel better about this? Thanks ladies.

When we got our SUV I almost hit quite a few things! I think it takes awhile to get used to the new blind spots and the area the vehicle covers.

Well, ... now you never again have to worry about putting that first scratch/ding in the new car...

It's not the size - this is the smallest car I have driven in a while! But Lindina and Carolynn you are both right. It is *my* first ding, and there was no one in the other car, and I was backing out and caught the front bumper and didn't hit anyone from behind. All in all, if you are going to have an accident, it is the one to have.

But I think my hubby is sooooo ticked at me - he's been "in his cave" all weekend and every time I try to apologize or anything, he's all "I'm not angry." Really?! Could have fooled me. *sigh

    Thanks for the support ladies.

    Hi Gwenny,

I bought a new car and drove it carefully for 1 1/2 years. I traveled a lot with it and had no accidents.

And guess what - we were renovating our house last month and I drove the car into some bricks. I was so %&$#2! It was all my fault. My wife luckily (who usually has lots to say when things like these happen) was quite philosophical about it.

I guess why we tend to have accidents in or around our house is because we assume that everything is in its place. I still haven't repaired my car yet. Need to fork out the dough and I had spent it all on the renovation.

At least you didn't hit anybody. I know a lady who 10 years ago backed up her car into her young son and killed him. She still hasn't recovered from that yet. I guess I wouldn't either.

And once I drove my car (my previous one) into a raging flood. My friends and I managed to escape through the driver side window. Thank God for that for one of the passengers was a 9-year-old girl who couldn't swim. My car however was a total loss for it was totally submerged overnight. It became a rust bucket after that.

You will soon forget about your accident once you have repaired your BMW. Your husband will too. I guarantee you that for I laugh when I think about the flood.

I like that idea, that "everything is in its place" ! And that is what my hubby said, as far as accidents go, this is the one to have.

Thank you so much for the good thoughts!

    (()) that's too bad!
When I started driving for the first time at age of 41:shock: I bought 1989 oldsmobile as my training wheels, and sure enough within few days got into an accident: I hit a BRAND NEW van leaving a nasty wide scrap on it. Poor guy, I felt so sorry of him and his brand new vehicle. But, as they say, Accidents happen! Wish you luck and peace of mind, and get it nicely repaired soon!
