My son is in 8th grade, in a public school. He has a learning disability, and there has been more than one occasion when I've asked myself, "Why on Earth am I bothering???" I liked homeschooling. But he's adamant that he wants to be there, even though it stresses him all to heck and occasionally has him breaking out in hives. So we pulled up our socks and I made him a schedule to keep him organized. I arranged for his teachers to sign off on his assignments, and I check his backpack every night. I bug him about his homework, and proofread his essays, and basically I make a right royal pain of myself. It's a drag. I don't like writing in red all over an assignment, handing it back to him and saying, "Do this again." I don't like it when he gets mad at me. I don't like feeling like the bad guy all the time. Yesterday was the IPRC review, and basically all I had to do was go in and sign some papers allowing my son to continue to be identified Gifted/LD in the school system. My son's teacher was sick and could have gone home since she was done her classes for the day, but when she saw that I was scheduled to come in, she decided to stick around. She wanted to tell me how much of an enormous difference I've made in my son's life, and how he's done a complete turn around from the beginning of the year when he was failing. She said, "Sometimes I feel like I'm beating my head against a wall, but your son is different. He's really stepped up to the challenge." She's proud of both him and me! Not only that, she's nominated him for the school's "most improved student" award - there's just one for all seven graduating classes! He's going to be shocked when they announce his name at graduation. I was feeling very discouraged last week, because my son was being extra grumpy. Now, bless her, I'm feeling renewed and re-energized.
Wow two wonderful teachers in one child's life! You and the public school teacher. How could he NOT do well with a team like that supporting him? So happy for you and your son. Beth
Wow! Congratulations! Good for you, for continuing, even though it's hard, and good for him for doing so well! Yay!
It sounds like you were getting the pat on the back you deserve. There are many times when it is easy to overlook all of the behind the scenes work. I am glad that you are able to team up with the teacher to help your son. As a former teacher, I can attest that it is a team effort. Way to go to you, your son, and a great teacher!
Congratulations to you and your teacher. You have done a wonderful job of homeschooling your son. Your determination and dedication has paid off. I am very happy for you.
FANTASTIC!!! Isn't it great when parents and teachers can actually work together for the kids' advantage?
