Hi! I think we may have figured out that my oldest is lactose intolerant. So I need some recommendations for a lactose-free milk that is actually good, please. I am hoping this will be easier to find than I think it will be.
    Thanks!

Lactaid milk is good. I drank that for my entire pregnancy and while I was nursing my baby because he'd get bad tummy aches when I drank regular milk. Even the Walmart GV brand tastes good.

If that doesn't work for you there is almond milk which does taste like almonds to me, rice milk which isn't too bad, and soy milk which I've never actually tried but my boys think it's delicious! There is also hemp milk, but that's very pricey.

As a child I had a lot of trouble with milk, so instead of milk I drank Coffee Rich brand non dairy creamer. I liked it then and even now I still find that I enjoy it's taste when I'm able to find it locally. If you check their website you can find the products near you.

We use Lactaid or a store brand for kids called Mootopia. I tried almond milk, but dd says it's gross. I don't use soy milk, because of the possible negative effects of soy on girls.

Soy + girls = bad hormonal issues

Most people I know who are lactose intolerant can still drink raw (unpasteurized) milk. The pasteurization process is what alters the lactose to make it more difficult to digest.

Goat milk is another option... if she likes it. It's either love or hate with goat milk.

My husband is lactose intolerant. He pretty much avoids milk but will indulge in ice cream and cheese but he can tolerate that to a degree. He is also tolerant if I cook with milk as in pancakes but for alfredo sauce he can only have so much. If he is in the mood for cereal he will use Lactaid or the Kroger brand.

I seem to be developing an intolerance to milk products. I am cutting down on dairy anyway. But, I have found almond milk to be great. I buy the vanilla and dark chocolate. I have not purchased soy in a long time since I like the almond. Coconut milk is also another option. I think you can buy a small amount...so try the original and the vanilla...some like the vanilla even in cereal better than the original. I'm a vanilla person myself for cereal. You can also cook with almond and soy milk....if you go to the Silk website you can find great ways to use it. I highly recommend the Silk Dark Chocolate Almond milk. I have two kids that don't like it and one that does...so you never know.

We deal with this - two of mine have trouble with milk proteins, which makes things a bit more complicated. Lactiad won't do the trick for them.

I use A LOT of coconut milk - the canned kind - in cooking and baking. the refrigerated kind is very good, but pricey and hard to find.

I had forgotten all about hemp milk. It's DELICIOUS. I haven't seen it for sale since we moved to Texas, though.

We will use almond milk when the boys want a treat like cereal with milk, but in general, they drink water.

Calcium is an important point - only, there are other calcium rich food aside from milk. Almond milk actually has more calcium per 8 oz than cow's milk (I am basing that on a recipe I use that is strictly almonds and water...you'd need to check the nutrition label on the brand you buy). Green veggies, broccoli, and canned fish with bones in it. I know how gross that sounds, but a lot of life is what you're used to. Since my boys have dealt with this since they were very little, they don't know much different. You can always make salmon loaf or something, but I think it makes the house smell awful and I'd rather just deal with salmon salad LOL.

If you get yogurt or kefir that is good quality and is sold with live cultures, she may also avoid any stomach upset.

Also - I spoke with a rep from Cabot Cheese once who told me their sharpest cheese have no lactose left in them. Doesn't make it so my boys can eat it, but I thought it was interesting.

Agreed. My DH has milk issues, and now we drink goat's milk. We feel that goat's milk tastes better than raw cows milk. If the female goats are kept away from the males, goat's milk doesn't have a "funky" taste at all. It's much more easily digested by our bodies too.

Ok, so Will had nothing to eat/drink this morning until he drank about half a cup of Lactaid. He almost immediately started complaining that his chest felt like it was going to explode. I am thinking this is bloating that he's referring to.
So now I am not sure what this means..... it sounds like maybe he is allergic to milk itself, not just the lactose. :( Anyone have any suggestions?
    TIA!

If that's the case you'll need to try Goat's milk, Soy, Almond, Hemp, Rice, or non dairy coffee creamer. basically anything that isn't from a cow, and see which one(s) he likes and can drink without feeling icky.

My son (age 11) doesn't mind using Lactaid milk in his cereal, but he doesn't like it just by itself. As far as just drinking milk, he doesn't do that as often, but when he does, he does ok with the vanilla almond milk. It's sweet, so it's not like drinking milk...which I guess it why he doesn't do it often, lol. I will say that he LOVES a chocolate almond milk we found. PureAlmond I think is the brand. He says that while it does taste different than your typical chocolate milk, it really does well with satisfying his craving for chocolate milk. :)

We tried rice milk, and it was just ok. Soy was most definitely a "please don't ever make me drink that again, thankyouverymuch!" moment, lol.

We have allergies to milk so I make my own rice milk and sometimes soy milk. It is cheap and easy and my kids love it. It can get expensive to buy it but our favorite brand is Rice dream/Soy dream.

I have been dairy free for 3 years now. I can't remember where you live but here the stores have tons of options for non diary milk drinks. I love Coconut milk, but it taste like coconut, I love almond milk too. But not the plain ones. I like the vanilla flavored. I drank rice milk for a long time, because my nursing ds couldn't have soy. I think that taste like dirt, but it is better then water on the cereal. All of it you have to just try and see what he likes. Because I can't stand the chocolate varieties, they taste chalky to me, and others here say they love them. You can buy it in shelf stable packaging that will last forever, or the 1/2 gallons that are cold with the milk. HEre is a link where you can get coupons for silk brand items. They have recently had lots of $1 off coupons in the newspapers around here too.
