Has anyone else thought the same things.... its a never ending job! Homeschooling that is... when I am not schooling the girls, my mind is on what the next curr. or study will be on, or I am searching and looking for the right curr., or I am making my own! I am not complainning by no means, it just hit me today that this is a full time job that (well for me) seems to never end.
Hehehe! But, yeah, I feel the same way. This is my 10th year and I was so burnt out. It was a rough year. I felt that we didn't accomplish everything we should have, but there's always next year. Full time job-for sure!
Absolutely agree to this. I feel like I'm either always teaching, always preparing, or always researching SOMETHING! LOL It makes me worried for what I'm going to do when they are grown and gone. I fear boredom!!!!
Just like ps teachers. I know I took about two weeks off (oh but wait we attended our hs convention durring that time). Now I am finishing up ordering my curriculum and writing out course plans. We will start up part time in July and then fulltime at the end of August....it never ends.
Hi everyone, I used to feel the same way, but my last student is finished. We are closing our home school. My daughter has been accepted to college and starts in less than two months. She is working full-time for the summer. My son is attending a local technical college. I used to think this day would never come and worry if I had done enough. The day has come, and I find myself wondering what the future holds for me and other "out of work" home-schooling moms like me. Cherish every day that you are allowed to spend with your precious students. These home school days fly by way too fast, and kids do grow up. I am planning to offer some classes geared to the homeschooling community. I hope and believe that I still have something to offer to the homeschooling community even though my students have graduated. I am moving forward and finding my new place. Life is an adventure!! Happy homeschooling, Susan
Susan, I think that's a great idea to offer classes to homeschooled students. I have often remarked that there's just not enough out there for us during the school months, at least where we lived. I keep mulling around the idea of a homeschool store. I'd have all sorts of curriculum available to see and purchase, a used section, classes that would meet during the day, provide meeting space for co-ops, and workshops for moms. My youngest is 6 so it would be awhile for me and my dream. But I know it would be an asset to the community. We have many, many charter and homeschooled kids in the area and surrounding communities. We have one homeschool bookstore but its out in the country and only open 1 day a week for 3 hours-not convenient. Congratulations on graduating your last student and best wishes on your new projects!
It is a full-time job. I like to think of myself as a teacher that does such a good job, that I'm worth more than money can pay me. My riches is knowing that children are receiving the best possible education that will teach them how to be responsible Christian ladies and gentleman. I am obsessed with finding curriculum, and I read and re-read my teacher planners and booklets. I'm reading my son's required books this summer so I'll know what he's supposed to learn....it goes on and on. I take my RR catalog with me EVERYWHERE...even to the pool and beach when I should be relaxing. But this does relax me...it's exciting to me!!! It's the best job I've ever had!!! As far as when I "retire", I would like to go into business for myself. Maybe a floral shop, craft store, or something that I could put into practice that I have/will learn right along with my children...floral design school sounds good for me...but who knows, my husband would love having ALL the attention once the kids are all grown up!!!
Hi Mom 2 3, The store is a great idea! I might even look into incorporating a homeschool consignment shop into our plan eventually. We are going to start by offering six academic classes like Latin, Spanish, Poetry Writing, English from the Roots Up, and The Body Book (Bones). We may also offer Music Theory, and Zumba for Kids (friend is getting certified). We will be charging between $7 and $10 per 90 minute class. We are hoping to launch this adventure this fall. Hi Lady Dove, I am glad to see others with younger children thinking about what's next a lot earlier than I did. It is good to have a plan! Bountiful blessings to all!
Rose7212: Your class choices are great and your prices are quite reasonable. Do you have store space or where would you be having the classes? In the cities around us here, we have community services districts and community colleges that offer classes. People from the community can hook up with them, get listed in their course offering booklet and use space at their facilities. Of course, you somehow split the money with them, but if you need facilities, they have 'em.
yes it is a full time job. But, it is worth it in the end. I had one graduate this year and now I am sitting here saying where did the time go. I will tell you all one thing. You will miss it, but it is rewarding in the end to see them blossom right in front of your eyes, all because of you and your help. So, keep pushing along and remember this full time job ends sooner then you want it too.
I find myself worried a lot about this day in my own life, too. Your post has given me so much hope. So what if MY time homeschooling MY children is done - I will still have so much to offer the homeschooling community at large! What a great idea. What a great focus on purpose, etc. I think you'll be amazing, and derive great joy from using that gift!
Yes, it's a full time job. My dh is always getting after me for always going over school things, and I'm not at all as dedicated as a lot of hs moms. Unlike many who have posted here, it's a love hate/relationship relationship. I like homeschooling my kids, but don't think I'll be upset when it's over. I have about 6 years left. I will miss the kids being around when they move out.
