This is just a shot in the dark here, but are there any ladies located in this area, any that have family or know of anyone that I could possibly contact for my son to have some exposure to farming, animals and farm life? He is 12 1/2 years old, a solid, sturdy boy and VERY INTERESTED in becoming a farmer someday! I really need something like this to hold his interest and engage him in staying settled with me, instead of being lured, bribed and tempted to live with his father an hour away where there are issues that are definitely not good for him! His father is prepared to take this to court, and I know much of the outcome will hinge on my son's thoughts and opinions. He thinks there is so much more to do in areas that he likes (hunting, raising puppies, farming, dirtbiking, etc.) if he lives with his father. But I know this is because he doesn't have anything here to compare that to. If he did, I don't think he'd be wanting to make such a drastic move! Any help or ideas would be so very much appreciated....... Thank you!

    Hi

I am in the Rochester area but do not have a farm. Are you a member of a LEAH Chapter? If so have you checked with them? Is he signed up with 4h? I know a few people in our chapter that do that. What about boy scouts? I know there is a homeschool group in our area that does camping and stuff like that.

Which side of town are you on? I might be able to think of some other things.

    Hi Maureen,

Sorry for the long delay in a reply. To answer your questions, I have been a member of LEAH, but am not currently. We have been involved in a homeschool gym and swim program, tae kwan do, and various other extra-curricular activities, including having a YMCA membership. We try to be very involved in whatever the children do whether it be support in their activities, knowing who their friends are, where they are and encouraging get-togethers for socialization, etc. The trouble I have is, with many activities, they require attendance on days that the children are not with me, especially alot of times the weekends, when they aren't here for any but one. And during that weekend, they still spend a good amount of their Saturday with their father as the court ruled for that. So, it's pretty frustrating because of the schedule, and an hour distance between our two homes.
I was thinking that if maybe there was a local farming family here on the eastside where I'm located, my son could be allowed to work with them (in whatever way they felt was appropriate) and learn of the farming trade which he is VERY interested in. Not only would he be learning, but be happily occupied here doing something he really enjoys and wouldn't be so persuaded by his father that only the good things like that are out there with him.
Thanks for your suggestions and taking the time to think of ideas to help me!

I know there are some LEAH members out there on the east side that have farms. Maybe contact some of the chapter leaders. I know I have talked to folks at HIS sports that have farms and such...just don't know their names since they are not a part of my chapter. Are you a member of the simplyhomeschooling yahoo group? You could post on there and someone might have a name for you.
