I am compiling a list of books for next school year for my son. What are your favorite classic literature picks around the 4th-6th reading level?
Huck Finn Tom Sawyer King Arthur Anne of Green Gables Little House series Adam of the road Lord of the Rings The Chronicles of Narnia
Johnny Tremaine Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry The Bronze Bow Treasure Island The Secret Garden (Not a "classic", but boys LOVE, LOVE, LOVE "The Adventures of The Mad Scientist Club"!!!) Black Beauty My Friend, Flicka Robin Hood
Some we read: Where the Red Fern Grows Across Five Aprils The Sign of the Beaver Call it Courage A Wrinkle in Time The Cay
Great list. I haven't seen the Mad Scientist Club. I'll have to check it out. Is the Robin Hood book you refer to the one by Pyle?
My son is a reluctant reader but he liked these around that age: Mr Popper's Penguins It's Like This, Cat Huck Finn The Phantom Tollbooth The Sign of the Beaver The Cay Island of the Blue Dolphin Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Esio Trot
I'm not refering to any one particular Robin Hood book. I have one upstairs, but I'm too lazy to go upstairs to see, lol! I do have a copy of King Arthur and his Knights by Henry Frith. Rascal is by Sterling North. It's about a boy whose mother is dead. He has a pet raccoon, which (of course!) is always getting into trouble. Here's about The Mad Scientist Club: http://www.powells.com/biblio/62-9781930900103-0 The stories originally appeared in Boys Life magazine (the official magazine for the Boy Scouts) when I was a kid. I loved them back then, and Phillip thinks they're great now.
Justin Morgan Had a Horse Snow Treasure (by Marie McSwigan) Farmer Boy Cricket in Times Square Charlotte's Web or any E.B. White book MT3
Thanks. I love Roald Dahl and so does my son. You have a few I don't know that I'll check out. Thanks!
LOL, thanks! I'll check out the Frith book. I was thinking it was the Mallory one My boy loves knights and castles so it would be one he would like. Thanks for the link for the Mad Scientist Club. I have some books to check out!
WOW!!! WHAT a list!!! We've done many on that list, but boy, do we have a long way to go! But at least it will give me an idea of what I might want to read aloud this year....
If you haven't read "The Phantom Tollbooth" yet, I'd also highly recommend that! (Even adults would appreciate the humor and twist of words.)
