We are not movie watchers at all - I mean AT ALL! The boys do enjoy movies, but we rarely get around to watching them. I'm thinking of maybe getting a subscription to NetFlix and using that for my sons' history curriculum. I just did a quick search and it looks like there are quite a few good historical documentaries and such there, so it could be a great resource rather than buying stuff. What do you think? Are there enough good movies there to make it worth it? Or should I look elsewhere for the boys' history stuff?
Yes there are some great movies on Netflix, and if it were not for the two price increases in 6 months I wouldn't have a single complaint about them!
I can't imagine what we would do without Netflix! I do use it for history stuff, but what surprised me is how much science my ds learns from it. Discovery Channel, Nat Geo, all kinds of animal shows, engineering.... there is just so much good stuff that I don't always think of as "school", yet he's learning. Dd is even taking an interest in Literature she never thought she'd be into by watching movie versions of A Wrinkle in Time and such.
I've used Netflix for exactly that reason. Some wonderful things there, not just documentaries. My brother just told me about the movie Far and Away that he shows in his history class and the kids love. I can't wait to rent it.
love Netflix for both of my kids. The documentaries are awesome, and the kiddo stuff (for my 2yr old) is great too.
I use this site : http://www.teachwithmovies.org/indexes-main.htm#alphabetical for using movies with different subjects ( some are for older kids IMHO) and my teens love it. My kids are visual learners and using movies along with the subjetcs help it sink in more. Oh and NetFlix is worth it..we are going to streaming only just before the new price increase ( on Sept. 1st) though but I have been very happy using them for school purposes.
We love NetFlix as well Even with the price increase it's worth it because it's still cheaper than buying or renting elsewhere. My kids have really enjoyed seeing some of the documentaries on there and many times they learn things that we wouldn't have thought to cover otherwise!
We use it a lot - usually Wednesday nights or Friday nights are family movie nights - so we watch a fun movie or "educational" one. Now that my ds is older, we get to start on some of the Epic films, like Gladiator and Braveheart. Can't wait!
