I just can't decide what to use for my ds this year for World History. He is not the sit down and read a book type. We did Geography Matters for World Geography last year and that was fantastic but I am stumped this year. Any ideas??????
I highly love and recommend Mystery of History Vol.1...It is chronological and Christian...also, the lessons are very short so you can supplement with the amount of activities you choose. It is appropriate for all age levels. I am using it for 3rd and 9th grades!
If he does not like to read books do not attempt Abeka's World History..according to sd it was boring! Are you looking for something more hands on or maybe just centered around a topic? When you get to high school you are usually looking at either text book or literature based approach. Sd did BJU for American and really liked the way that was set up and she liked the activity book.
We're using Mystery of History Vol I. along with Timetables of History for my 10th grader. I'm using it as a supplement to World Views of the Western World as I do not believe WVWW offers enough history for a full credit. But we're doing more of a literature approach so if your boy is not a fan of reading perhaps the Mystery of History on it's own will work for him. As Emily mentioned, "the lessons are very short" and you could supplement audio books, movies and timelines -my kids always complained about working on their timelines, but the information and pictures they chose to add helped history become more personal and they remembered the information.
Thanks, I will look into Mystery of History. I plan to still use some of Geography Matters this year with whatever program I choose. My dd did abeka and I know it would NOT work for my ds. Here I even have the book left from her but I don't want to make it a miserable year for us.
My ds15 doesn't care to sit and read predetermined literature either. We used the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia last year (9th grade) along with videos, TV shows and various books of his choosing. We didn't do any tests because Ds has a natural love of history and he can tell me every detail of what he learned. If your son enjoys history, just not the typical curriculum type of study, then maybe you could check into the approach we use.
I am doing world history for my ds grade 10 and his younger sisters as well. For the first part of the year, he is reading this cool book we found called The Rise of Empires (not a traditional textbook) and we always do maps, timelines and general notebooking. Plus I try to add in a whole bunch of hands on projects -- one year we made a huge paper mache mask of King Tut (like they found in the tomb - very cool!) This year we are looking at making Roman hats (like the centurians wore) and foam/duct tape weapons and then "re-enact" certain military scenes from Roman history. We also try to do a lot of fictionalized historial movies - for my ds this year we will watch Gladiator, Clash of the titans, perhaps Jason and the Argonauts, Braveheart, Elizabeth, and a few religious films that shows Egyptian history and earlier. I am still looking for some stuff for my girls to watch - we get all this through netflix. Then we play lots of games -we either make our own or try to buy "themed" games for the kids.
