(Just kidding, of course, but it's the first thought that popped into my mind.) http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/07/20/tennessee.no.school/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
Wouldn't that be hysterical??? So finally the schools get set to open, and NOBODY shows up because they're homeschooling now?:shock::lol:
I find it funny that it is stated in the article that they need to open on time so they have enough time to learn stuff before the fall state test lol!
I went searching to see if there were any updates on this out there I found this http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2011/jul/26/memphis-school-board-approves-funding-deal-city-sc/ and then this http://www.west.grsc.k12.ar.us/ looks like they started a week late. This is NOT education as a priority. It has ballooned into a huge bureaucracy with students and families as pawns. Things like this and things crazy in my district are the reasons why we homeschool more than any. I'm not signing up to play their games.
In a way it would be cool to have a whole city of homeschoolers, BUT.... Just think of all the different teaching methods and philosophies clashing. I am careful about who I talk with about how I am homeschooling. I don't think anyone in the co-op I belonged to would shun me, but I know from experience that they may think differently of me if I were to tell them about how much more relaxed I am now and I am not even an unschooler (intrigued by that, but can't seem to make the jump). I say I know from experience, because I know what I used to think about relaxed homeschoolers. Now that my philosophy has changed I have to be careful in not wanting to convince everyone to go to a more relaxed method. I have to stop and think that I don't have all the answers and truly that what I am choosing is a risk in some ways and would not work for others.
Now that is interesting.... On a few levels. First, even if we had ZERO funds, we'd make something work. And with a school district, seems like they would have plenty of books leftover from last year, plenty of chalk, etc etc. I'm not suggesting teachers work for no pay, here, but they should be able to scare up SOMETHING for resources. Second, and probably more troubling: why is the city withholding the funds? There has to be a reason. I don't know a single person who doesn't feel that education is a priority, so I doubt it's considered less important than other city issues. So why? lol- I also found it disturbing that the concern was about the testing and not the education!
Thanks for the followup links! Wow. I can honestly see where the board is coming from, though. It looks like they've been going at a loss for awhile... So who was taking the funds allotted for education?! I loled at the testing too
