(3 digit #'s) division problem,help?

    how so I explain to my 6th grade dd this problem?
    2,146/307

    she knows how to divide by 2 digit numbers but she's struggling dividing by 3 digit #s.

    I would tell her that 307 is "almost" 300, and 2146 is "almost" 2100. How many times does 300 go into 2100? Let's try that and see, understanding that this "method" will sometimes give us either a "too big" or "too small" answer and we'll have to adjust it up or down. But sometimes it's just a matter of guessing.

    exactly as Jackie said...

    I know that teaching my daughter to round and estimate came first.... she is a very analytical and precise type of personality, so we struggled with the estimating and rounding a little.

    She still doesn't like it, because she wants the right answer the first time, not estimating to get a close guess... but she is getting it.
