Ds13 has a fractured knuckle and had to have 4 stitches in his right hand today. He has a splint on it Now I don't know what I'm supposed to do about schooling him. Tomorrow he's going to be extremely sore. I'm probably going to give him the day off from school tomorrow and possibly the rest of the week depending on how he feels. I want him to do his schoolwork, but I don't want to make him if he's in pain. I was thinking of doing the lessons orally for most subjects and leaving math alone.. Or should I just throw it all out until he's got the splint off and the stitches out possibly a week from now at the earliest? Angela
I would probably have him do what work he can orally and leave any writing until he is able to do it without any pain.
Is it possible he could do some work (after a few days off) with his left hand? I remember going to school with a boy who broke his hand and for the time he was in a cast he had to write with his left hand. We all had fun trying to learn to write left handed.
Can he type on the computer with just his left hand? I know it would be very slow going for me, but I COULD do it....
I would give him tomorrow off, assess how he feels later, and then do everything you can orally. I don't think the writing matters right now unless it's easy stuff that can be done with the left (like circling answers in multiple choice, for example). The writing is just something he'll have to rehabilitate when the splint comes off (along with any other motor skill he does with that hand). It'll take a while to work back up to full speed and neatness again.
Take him to a museum and learn there! Taking a few days off won't hurt anything. I would just switch gears and do an impromptu lesson about the history of our area - go to a different museum or historical site every day for the week.
That's a great idea!! Never been to the museum here. Been wanting to go to several museums in the area but have been putting it off. Now may be the time to go! Thanks for the suggestions everyone. You guys ROCK! Now that my son is out of the shower and splint wrapped back on his arm, I'm off to bed. Gonna have a GREAT day tomorrow! Angela
Oral. Reading. Videos of interest. Educational TV (age appropriate, sounds like he's a bit older?). For Math, you could help him by writing down his answers for him. Maybe talk him through it, have him talk you through how to write it out? I know that's time consuming and not ideal, BUT, would be a fresh way to do math. Sorry he had stitches on his knuckle! What did he do??? Poor guy!
