Where my kids have access to all sports they want to play without having to go to public school. Where my husband is the coach of the teams. Where we actually have enough kids in the area to make up the teams and where we all have fun watching and coaching our kids who are now excluded from sports in the upper ages.... That's my dream.. Is it within reach??? I don't know.. But I'm sure the heck ready to try to make it happen!! Anyone know how we can get something like this going? I'm SICK and tired of my kids feeling like they are missing out of things because they don't go to public school. It's not right and I don't want to send them off just so they can play sports. Good grief!! I'm seriously pumped about the idea of this but I don't really don't know the next step.. I'm sure there is the matter of insurance, equipment and a place to practice/play the games.. And most importantly, participants!!! Lubbock has a team but we can't drive that far every day for practice and I can't afford the $500. Abilene a team but again, I can't drive that far every day and the cost is still expensive..
Anyhow, This is my dream for the day...

i know this may not be of much help, but our kids play for a couple of the teams here in Lubbock. We don't practice but 2x a week (although there are still game days, so that probably doesn't help with the driving issue at all.) They have been very good about letting us make payments to help with the costs too. I'm trying to picture the other small towns around you. Maybe there's a way to put an ad in their papers for other homeschool families to contact you if they are interested in something like this. Is there a church that would allow you to use their facilities maybe? I'll keep my ears open around here for others that may be in your area and in the same situation:)

This is not the whole answer, but at least from a fitness perspective we have an exercise bike in the basement. I know there is the competitive aspect as well.

A homeschool father in our city started a baseball group just for homeschoolers. It took time but he was able to get a few teams together from this city and another. They now play against each other and have a great time. The teams have gained recognition and have been in the paper. They all have team uniforms and are scheduled to use the public parks just like the other sports teams. Since they were in the paper, more homeschoolers from other cities are trying to put teams together in order to have their children play sports.
Good luck!!! It will take time so do not get discouraged. It takes somebody to start it.

This is just the sort of public spirited thing that is needed in neighborhoods. It's great when someone is willing to set aside the time (and effort) to do this kind of thing.

    Great.

(PS: good point re earrings on the other thread; it was then closed so I couldn't respond.)

We have a soccer league in our area that is a part of the WNY Christian Schools association. We also have more informal programs (baseball, soccer, archery)that play just one day a week that are instructional and fun for the kids. It takes time but with dedication and persistance you can do it!

More power to them. And I guess that if it's in Upstate NY there are probably more wide open spaces than in the Big Apple, but what do I know.

Does your city have any community teams? Do you have a local community center?
Does your state allow homeschoolers to participate in public school extra curricular activities?

DS plays basketball twice a week at our city's recreation complex. It's just an open gym hour for middle school kids. The city also has teams that play actual games competitively. My state, Florida, allows homeshool kids to join public school sports teams and any other extracurricular activity at the schooly they would be attending based on where they live.

    Good luck.

Definitely more open space than down in NYC. Even though we are in the suburbs you just go down the road and there are farms. Best of both worlds around here.

Unfortunately, we don't have a community center that offers things like this to older kids. Up to age 14 is allowed to play soccer. But my son is not interested in soccer. He wants FOOTBALL. You know how big football is in the south. LOL.. My girls can play sports through the Boys and Girls Club. Just about any sport you can think of they have. Even football but not for kids older than 12.. URGH! I wonder if THEY would be willing to start something for older kids.... Hmmmm. Something to look into. We are going to join the Lubbock GRACE group in December when they start enrollment again and will be joining them for some of the fun outings that they do, like the corn maze on Oct. 4th. So we do have activities lined up just not sports to satisfy the young men in our house. Ds15 is playing football in public school and now ds13 REALLY wants to play and is willing to go back just to do so. Not happening. I just feel so guilty that opportunity is not there for them.

@mommix3: I am so glad you'll be at the Maize with GRACE:) I'll try and make a point to find you and formally introduce myself. We love GRACE, the kids are a little upset that we're not meeting this week as it's an extra Friday this month.
@mom24boys: It's refreshing to hear someone wants to move BACK to Lubbock. So many times people are talking about just wanting to get away!!
