I'm in charge of November's homeschool meeting. I have NO clue what we are going to do. I need to tell them something soon. We are supposed to report to the group a month prior so they can send out emails to everyone. One educational meeting and one fun meeting.. The fun meeting I think is going to be just a potluck lunch get together and an easy family craft. But the educational meeting I don't know. We have yet to have anyone present something to the group. usually it's a field trip type thing and I don't want to do that. Everyone pritty much knows about the pilgrims and their voyage to the "new world". I want a different take on it. If that even makes sense but I don't know which way to go... It has to be something that will keep the attention of the young as well as the older kids. I seriously don't know what I'm doing. I didn't want to ask anyone in our group for help but I may do it if I can't come up with anything on my own.. Angela
Okay here you go..... This one is great for students of all ages. The voyage over here must have taken a lot of preperation and work. First you could discuss the basic reason for coming here. Then you could show the route that was taken and discuss why it was the best route. Then you could discuss what would have been brought on board. Have the kids really brainstorm. Discuss the types of foods and possibly have samples. You could make pictures of the inside of the ship with rooms and have some cut and paste pictures ready. Then have the kids color, cut and paste the items onto the ship. You could get as elaborate or simple as you would like. For any older kids, while the younger kids are crafting, they could be getting ready to entertain the little ones. Yep, have a basic script, assigning roles and then when the little ones are done crafting the older kids put on a performance teaching the younger kids with visual. All in all this class could run one hour. 20 minutes for discussion, 20 minutes for craft and then the play. Just an idea, if you do not like it, I have more...................
I like that!! Where would I get the script? I have NO clue on this sort of stuff.. Throw out some more ideas.
Scholastics has some great skits , dont remember the names but they do have them for dollar sales! Also why not have each family represent a nation, whether American or whatever, since our country was founded on a multiple amount of cultures and such a modern day Thanks-giving meal should represent a variety of nations.
Be sure to read the book, "If You Traveled on the Mayflower...." by Scholastic (I think!). It has so much information!!! For example, the Mayflower was a sweet-smelling boat, because it had been used to carry wine. The wine and permeated the wood, and made the smell of the boat much more bearable. Have the kids make a list of what they might take with them, and then compare it to what WAS taken.
