I haven't posted here in a very long time. I don't get the chance to surf the boards much, but I enjoy it when I do. I've been homeschooling for five years and I have two girls ages 8.5 and 5.5 entering 4th grade and 1st grade respectively. We use mostly A Beka and have a very traditional method of education. Looking forward to getting some great support and sharing my knowledge as well!!
Hey Nicole, welcome back. I notice that you said you use Abeka curriculum. Do your children enjoy the traditional method
My oldest child is a challenge partly because she's too smart for her own good. She doesn't enjoy school period really. Usually it's because she has to study things that don't interest her or because it's too easy or too hard. I have tried to keep her from getting bored by giving her challenging work, but sometimes that backfires because it ends up more than she can handle. All of that is to say, I don't think she would enjoy school no matter what I used, unless it was child lead learning, which I won't go for. My younger daughter, however, is very flexible and has no problems following directions and listening, etc. She usually does exactly what I tell her and I don't have any problems. As a result, she "enjoys school" more because she's not constantly in trouble and she gets done quickly. My older one would enjoy school more if she could ever get it through her thick skull that she's better off just to do what she's told and get on with life than to procrastinate and get in trouble constantly. KWIM? All in all, I'm very happy with A Beka for my family. I feel like it is a very thorough and grounded education and it also solidly Christian, very conservative, Creationist perspective. That is right in line with our beliefs so I'm happy. I don't think A Beka is perfect by any means, but none are, and of all the different things I've ever looked at, I thought A Beka was the best considering the content and the way it's covered, and considering price, etc.
Hi and welcome. I'm AmyU and I have one son. We are using A Becka this year as well. I have used some A Becka books in the past and they seemed to work well. So we will see how things go. I will be using something else for spelling, what ?. Again welcome.
