We pay to send Emily to a school outside of our district. If we lived in that distict and wanted to send her to the school here, we just could not afford it. It is 5 times as much as the one she is in now. I could have given my older daughter's address and not paid, but I know that is lying and since we don't pay taxes in that district it would be stealing. I know that some can't afford the fees for better schools and I don't claim to know what the answer is. I just know I can't teach Emily to be honest and turn around and lie or steal even for her. I do agree the safest school is the homeschool and it really hurt to send Emily back when she asked to go. I am glad we let her go though because she is so happy and doing great.

I DO see both sides of this one... Our district is working with a very limited budget based on the taxes collected in our district (plus state funds, but I'm assuming all things being equal on that one). They can't afford to educate children who don't live within this district.

On the other hand, well, we all know the other hand.

And if I grew a third had, I'd say homeschooling is the best option. But I haven't been exposed to nearly enough radiation.

The problem is not sending your child to a better school but instead falsifying documents or lying about residency to do so. That is illegal. I should not have to pay for students from other districts to go to our districts schools. If you want to send your child to a better school you move to that district or pay the out of district rate that many schools have.

This is a local story for me. This woman is a liar and a thief who feels no remorse for any of her crimes. This is not just about wanting her kids in a better school and I think she belongs in jail.

Local for me, too. She did it knowing full-well what she was doing. If she wanted to send her kid to an out-of-district school, she should have done it legally and paid the tuition associated with it. Otherwise, what's to keep all parents from refusing to vote in needed funds for their school, and then send their children to the schools where the parents WILL. The parents are paying for those schools in the form of higher taxes; this woman was not.

And I admit to posting it without having a full understanding the educational system in the United Sates...

If she's lying and cheating then she should be reprimanded

Except...most often the families caught doing this are struggling lower class, minority families. They can't afford to live in the better school districts, or to pay the fines. It's nice to say "buy a house somewhere else" but not everyone can.

And mind you, I'm conservative as they come.

The woman never claimed that she did it for a better education. She claimed that she didn't want her children coming home from school in her unsafe neighborhood. She actually worked in the school district that her children should have attended. She didn't even need to "buy a house somewhere else" because her welfare-cheating father already lived in the other district. She could have moved in with him, but she didn't want to "lose her independence" and her government housing.

Not speaking specifically for THIS family, but in GENERAL when this happens, I can see both sides.

Districts get a certain amount of money. They can't afford to teach children not from their district.

BUT- this should be a sign!!! People forced to lie and cheat so their children will have a better chance- It's a weird version of Les Miserable (steal the bread and live... or don't and die- nevermind that no one should be starving in the first place).

Back when we thought our children would only be homeschooling through last year, we had considered sending our children to another elem. school in our district. We would have paid the tuition, but I can see why others wouldn't be able to but still want better for their kids, kwim?
