When my almost 6 yo. does copy work he copies my lower case letters as upper case letters, all of them. Is this normal?

Maybe he finds the upper case easier than the lower? My 6 year old would much rather write upper case letters and used to do the same with his copy work.

Have you asked him why he does this? I would say it's normal. When kids are first learning letters they don't understand reasoning behind using upper or lower case and probably figure an A is an a no matter the size.

I agree with Crystal. My son prefers to write uppercase letters. He didn't understand that there is a difference. Right now we are practicing writing with lowercase. Soon I will start teaching the proper case for sentences and such.

My 6 year old finds upper case easier as well (more pointed letters as opposed to more curves in lower case). He has learned that I am cracking down and I make him erase it and write lower case if it should be. He does not want to do it twice, so he takes more time to do it properly.

Hi Yes I would think it is because he finds it easier. But have you tried dictation instead? I sit with my 6 yo and tell her verbatum each thing. I will say 'Upper case A space d-o-g space w-e-n-t space etc' I also include punctuation. It is tedious but I found I did this in grade one with son who is now eight and slowly as they learned to spell I would drop my spelling and say "Upper case 'a' space dog' that way they are spelling for themselves. After they master that technique then I require them to copy from the whiteboard which my son does now without complaint at eight :D Just a thought as I know it can be hard for young minds to look at then look away to copy and remember.

Both of my children started out writing in uppercase letters, no matter what case the letters were in that they were copying from. My son did this the longest, and I had to start making him correct it because he didn't seem to distinguish the difference in which way the letters were when he was reading stuff. Eventually, he began to notice and did just fine.
