Thought a bit about Thanksgiving today! (Hey, it's only a few weeks away.....) Got to thinking about the different family traditions, and am curious to know what specific thing(s) your family carries out year after year. I can think of one thing right away that happens every year at Thanksgiving in my family - my mother always brings the stuffing which is made from the crockpot recipe she's had for years! Care to share something of yours - past or present?

First off, I would love to have a crockpot stuffing recipe if she is willing to share!

The only other thing that is a given in our house (unless we are out of town) is that I light up our outside Christmas decorations. The inside of the house is usually done even earlier, but I fight the urge and resist the outside until the general rule of thumb for outside lights.

Otherwise, we change most stuff year to year depending on whether we want to travel to visit family, have family come visit us, or keep it low key and do something alone at home. The worst was the year I had the stomach bug. Dh took ds to the movie and walmart. I felt so bad for them.

For Canadian Thanksgiving we go to the local county fair that weekend and spend time with family. When we lived in the US I usually put up the Christmas tree that weekend.

I'd be happy to get that crockpot stuffing recipe and send it to you! :) I'm the same with the lights and putting up the Christmas tree that weekend, too. I love the cozy glow of white string lights outside and inside.

The tradition at our house is to light up the yard the night of Thanksgiving. If we are not home, we light up the day we return. We will start putting the lights up this weekend. I was going to start putting some lights up this week but Handsome forgot to take out the boxes for me.

We watch the parade and all gather at my sister's house for lunch. One sister makes angel biscuits and the other sometimes makes a ham. I fix everything else and we all carry it out the street and eat at noon because that is when my mother wants to eat. We do not have a very big extended family even though Freddy and I have seven kids. I don't stress over who can't be there and just tell them to do whatever they want and I will not be upset. We spent too many years with my MIL demanding we be at her house for every holiday!

Wow - I didn't realize there were many more out there like me who like to get their lights up and lit! I need to get my lights out, too. What are angel biscuits like? I'm not fussy about the actual day of the holiday celebration, just as long as we can spend time celebrating the holiday - whenever that is!! I don't think the day makes the holiday, but to my mother....it definitely does! My tradition is to not stress over that with my children. :)

Yum, open faced turkey sandwiches with gravy!

It varies from year to year for us, depending on whether or not I feel like cooking :p

My number one thing, though, is ALWAYS to have a basket of nuts. And a special tablecloth on the table :)

Kind of a tradition, but not a pleasant one... trying desperately to defrost the turkey before it goes in the oven! I don't feel comfortable taking it out more than 2-3 days early, and for some reason it is ALWAYS still frozen inside. So every year.. our turkey gets a pre-cooking bath in our bathtub :p

I always allow my turkey to defrost slowly in the refrigerator for many days. Since it is frozen when it is purchased, it is still icy on the inside but not frozen. I just run it under water and the last ice comes right out.
