I can't decide. It's so tempting to let the gray hair just come in. I've been fighting this battle probably for over 10 years. I have to go every 5 weeks or so, and really the last 2 weeks are sort of embarrassing the way the roots show. I'm tempted to just go gray. But at the same time, I'm trying to grow my hair longer. I'm thinking about having gray highlights added to make the transition not quite so ugly. Anybody BTDT with letting the gray grow in?

I have absolutely no clue what BTDT means, but I have nearly a whole head of gray hair. There is simply NO WAY I can justify either the money or the time to dye my hair. Besides - isn't gray the natural thing?

Had one of those moments a couple weeks ago: When I was washing my hands, I noticed (eeeeeeeeeek) grey hair !!! Or maybe I should say MORE grey hair in a different place on my head... LOL, I could have cried !! So I had this brilliant idea that I should put highlights in my hair again. Note to self, when you're trying to hide what you don't want to see, DON'T put auburn highlights in anymore. All I managed to do was make them stand out even more  I was so NOT impressed by it !! I was going to go have it fixed but then I figured the heck with it, I've earned every grey hair on my head so I'm leaving it for now.

Nancy, BTDT = Been there, done that

I let my hair go grey. I've considered coloring it, but never got around to it.

I had a total stranger come up to me in the bathroom at AWANA quizzing once. I was brushing my hair, and she came in and told me how lovely my hair looked with all the grey. REALLY strange!!! But she was trying to decide if it was vain to color her hair or not. I've since got to know this lady pretty well...she's in the homeschool co-op and a sweet, sweet gal...but I'm just not use to people coming up and touching my hair and commenting on it.... lol!

Oh it's totally about vanity. I know that. I'm not ready to look old. Older, I should say. I'm 50 now, but I'm still surprised every time I pass a mirror nowadays. Where did that 30 year old go - the image of whom I still hold in my mind?

DO IT! :) Meaning, let the gray come! :)

I used to die my hair, and about a year ago or so, my husband asked me to stop. He said he felt the color was ruining my hair. I stopped dyeing it...since I had short hair, it took only a couple months for it all to grow out. Now I'm working on growing my hair longer too. But I LOVE IT. I'm probably about 40-50% gray. I get more compliments about how the coloring of the gray really flatters my face. I was afraid I'd look old, but I don't. :)

    So...go for it!!!!

I got my first grey hair when I was 17. I tried once in my 20s to "wash away the grey" myself with the DIY-at-home-in-the-shower thing, and it did NOthing! Not. A. Thing! So I decided the heck with it. I'll be 60 in a few days, so there's not much point.

My dd, on the other hand, also got her first grey hair when she was 17, but she's still "fighting the good fight". She's closing on 40, but only had her dd four (five in January) years ago -- she got tired of being mistaken for the baby's grandmother in public ...

As usual, I'm the one that's going to disagree.

I started greying at 17 and was completely grey by 30. I dye my hair at home for about $3 every two months. I will never, ever, EVER go back to grey at my age (36). I will consider it in maybe 20 years, but will probably opt for just a lighter color. My hair is curly and grey (love my straightener, too ;) ), so it makes me look about 20 years older than I am--and that was confirmed by numerous comments from friends and strangers before I started dying it.

I say, if you aren't ready to let it go grey then don't. I use Revlon Colorsilk from Walmart and it works very well. Hope this helps. :)

If you want to cover gray but not use horrible chemical hair dye, use henna. You can get red from straight henna, brown from henna with Amla added, and black from henna'ing first and then using indigo. If you need any help figuring it out I've been henna'ing my hair for 5+ years.

Its a good time to think about switching with all of the scary stuff in the news about PPD (which is in every commercial hair dye) causing serious issues and even death.

Oh, and if you are a natural blonde there is even something to boost that color naturally... All of this and it makes your scalp healthy and promotes hair growth!

Brooke, what do you do about roots? By 3 or 4 weeks after dyeing, my roots show terribly.

I am naturally blonde. At least I used to be. I'd be afraid to try henna because my hair really seems to "pull red" and I have to warn every hairdresser that it will turn out redder than you would expect. What is this thing that naturally boosts the blonde? I think I probably have too much gray now for that to be effective, but I"m intrigued enough to want to hear more.

I realize that I'm hardly yet qualified to answer this question. As it stands now, I'll just be happy to have any hair to speak of in the future be it gray or my natural brown. I don't plan on dyeing my hair. What worries me is how horrifyingly thin it has gotten the past couple of years. :(

My hair grows very slowly now since I have a bad thyroid. I take all kinds of nutritional supplements and it has gotten a bit thicker, but it takes it forever to grow. When it does start to really show again after about 5 or 6 weeks, I just let it go curly and it hides it quite a bit.

Now that I used the quote feature I can't look back at what chemical it is you were all talking about, or if you listed dark colors for henna...but I'll be checking it out.

What you want to use is called Cassia...its another natural plant based item that helps boost your blond AND give your hair and scalp a nice healthy feel. If you want a link of where to buy it, PM me.

you can do a nice dark brown with henna and amla or Khatam powder. Its actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it. PM me if you want more details.
